Google Pixel Pass: Phones & Services, One Subscription
Introducing Pixel Pass: Google's New Subscription Service
Concurrent with the release of the new Google Pixel 6 series smartphones, Google unveiled a novel purchasing option: Pixel Pass. This comprehensive subscription service enables customers to acquire a Pixel phone through manageable monthly payments, diverging from the traditional upfront cost.
The service is priced at $45 monthly for the Pixel 6 and $55 monthly for the Pixel 6 Pro. However, the benefits extend beyond mere phone access.
What's Included in Pixel Pass?
Subscribers gain access to a suite of Google’s services alongside their new device. These include expanded storage, music streaming, and premium video entertainment.
- YouTube Premium: Enjoy ad-free YouTube viewing, typically costing $11.99 per month.
- YouTube Music Premium: A music streaming service comparable to Spotify and Apple Music, succeeding Google Play Music.
- Google One Storage: 200 GB of cloud storage is provided for secure data backup.
- Google Store Discounts: Subscribers receive exclusive discounts on purchases from the Google Store.
- Google Play Pass: Access a curated library of apps and games without in-app purchases or advertisements, at no extra cost.
Additional Benefits and Device Flexibility
The Pixel Pass subscription also incorporates device protection. Preferred Care coverage is included, offering simplified repairs and safeguarding against accidental damage.
Pixel phones obtained through Pixel Pass are unlocked, ensuring compatibility with all major wireless carriers.
Purchasing Options and Potential Savings
Customers can enroll in Pixel Pass through the Google Store or in conjunction with a Google Fi phone plan.
Google estimates that subscribers can save up to $294 over a two-year period by opting for Pixel Pass. Furthermore, those who choose Google Fi will receive an additional $5 monthly discount, resulting in total savings of $414 over two years.
Target Audience and Competitive Landscape
This subscription model is tailored for users who frequently upgrade their devices and desire access to premium services. It directly positions itself as Google’s counterpart to Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program.
While Apple distributes its subscription services separately through Apple One, Pixel Pass consolidates them into a single, convenient package.
Availability
Preorders for the Pixel Pass with the Pixel 6 are currently being accepted in the U.S., with a starting price of $45 per month through the Google Store or Google Fi.
Note: A correction has been made regarding the savings through Google Fi, which is $5 per month, not $4 per month.
