OnStar Emergency Services Now Accessible via Alexa

A broadened collaboration between General Motors, the parent company of OnStar, and Amazon will soon allow users of Alexa devices to utilize OnStar’s emergency assistance directly from their residences.

Expanding the OnStar Ecosystem

Earlier this year, OnStar broadened its service offerings with the launch of the OnStar Guardian app, providing access to emergency services through mobile devices. This latest development extends the reach of the service to include customers’ voice-activated smart home devices.

Although the Guardian app is currently usable within a home environment, Jeff Wajer, GM’s Head of Product, explained to TechCrunch that many situations arise where individuals are without their smartphones but still require immediate help.

Accessibility and Convenience

Wajer highlighted that individuals with varying accessibility needs, potentially unable to operate a mobile phone, can now simply call for assistance using the OnStar-Alexa integration through voice commands.

Rollout and Compatibility

The integration will be implemented in phases, beginning with a select group of current OnStar subscribers before becoming more widely available in 2022.

Compatible Alexa devices encompass the Echo, Echo Dot, and Echo Show models.

GM has not disclosed the number of customers who will initially have access to the service, nor the associated costs. However, Wajer confirmed that an initial free trial period will be offered to the first group of OnStar customers.

Beyond GM Vehicles and Strengthening Partnerships

OnStar Guardian is accessible to all customers, irrespective of whether they own a General Motors vehicle.

This isn’t GM’s initial venture with Amazon; Amazon Alexa has already been integrated into the infotainment systems of certain GM vehicles. This new partnership signifies a deepening relationship between the two corporations.

Focus on Software and Subscription Services

This expansion also signals GM’s intention to bolster its software and subscription-based services beyond the confines of the automobile.

According to Pam Fletcher, GM’s VP of Global Innovation, the new service “demonstrates GM’s commitment to its growth strategy and innovating its software enabled services.”
