GIMP Paint Studio: Enhance GIMP for Digital Artists

Exploring Enhanced Digital Art Capabilities with GIMP Paint Studio
Many users find GIMP to be a powerful image manipulation program. We have previously highlighted resources for learning GIMP, including video tutorials and guides for creating wallpapers.
Furthermore, we’ve offered tutorials on creating image maps, enhancing screenshots with callouts, performing batch image editing, and generating stereographic projections.
Streamlining Graphics Creation with Scripts and Plugins
Frequently, graphic designers require the assistance of scripts or plugins to automate repetitive tasks. These tools can significantly reduce the steps needed to accomplish frequently performed actions.
For those engaged in digital drawing and painting, GIMP Paint Studio (GPS) represents a particularly exciting development.
Introducing GIMP Paint Studio (GPS)
GIMP Paint Studio is a comprehensive package designed to augment GIMP’s drawing and painting functionalities. It is especially beneficial for artists utilizing a drawing tablet.
The package includes a collection of new brushes and tools intended to provide a familiar and comfortable experience for digital painters from the initial launch of GIMP.
This plugin was developed by a digital artist whose impressive gallery is showcased on the download website. This gallery serves as a compelling demonstration of the artistic possibilities unlocked by GIMP and GIMP Paint Studio.
We learned about GIMP Paint Studio through Asian Angel, and are pleased to share this valuable resource.
Installation
To begin utilizing this package, the zip file can be downloaded from the Google Code site. This archive contains a comprehensive collection of resources, including brushes, palettes, gradients, patterns, and customized tool options.
Assuming GIMP is already installed on your system, the contents of the downloaded and extracted archive must be copied or moved into the corresponding GIMP directories.
A recommended approach is to maintain separation from the default GIMP assets. For instance, the entire GPS brushes folder can be transferred to GIMP’s brushes folder. This prevents potential slowdowns during GIMP startup due to an excessive number of brushes being loaded.
Locating GIMP Folders
The location of the original GIMP folders varies depending on your operating system:
- Windows Vista & 7: "C:\Username\.gimp-2.6"
- Windows XP: "C:\Documents and Settings\Username\.Gimp-2.6\"
- OS X: "/Users/Username/Library/Application Support/Gimp"
- Ubuntu/Linux: "/home/username/.gimp-2.6"
- Portable Version: "GIMPPortable/App/gimp/share/gimp/2.0/"
Once you've identified the correct directory, transfer the GPS brushes to the GIMP brushes folder, the new gradients to the GIMP gradients folder, and so on.
The GPS package also includes sessionrc and toolrc files. These can be used to customize GIMP’s layout for comfortable use with graphics tablets and to add tools to the Toolbox, respectively.
It is strongly advised to create backups of the original files before replacing them, allowing for easy restoration of the default layouts and tools if desired.
Expanded Toolset
Compared to GIMP’s standard offerings, GPS significantly expands the available tools for graphic designers and digital artists.
The package provides a diverse range of brushes, including shadowing pencils (such as graphite, 2B, and 6B), various pen brushes (like BIC pen and sketching pen), and oil brushes.
Furthermore, presets are included for airbrushing, ink tool usage, and smudging techniques. A complete listing of all available resources can be found here.
Artistic Creations Utilizing GIMP & GPS
The Gallery showcases a diverse collection of remarkable artworks, some originating from the author of GPS, a digital painter. These pieces effectively demonstrate the creative possibilities unlocked by combining GPS technology with the GIMP image editor.
Exploring GPS and Brush ResourcesShould these examples ignite your artistic drive, exploring GPS is highly recommended. It provides a powerful platform for digital art creation.
For those seeking more specialized tools, resources for obtaining additional brushes, potentially smaller in scope than the comprehensive GPS package, are also readily available.
