Tech Gifts for Stress Relief & Better Sleep | Gift Guide

Greetings from TechCrunch’s 2020 Holiday Gift Guide! Searching for the perfect presents? We are ready to assist! Throughout November and December, we will be publishing a series of gift guides. Our complete collection of guides can be located here.
The holiday season can often be a source of stress, even under typical circumstances. However, 2020 has presented unique challenges, and it remains to be seen what the remainder of this exceptionally difficult year will bring. To acknowledge one of the most challenging years in recent memory, we have compiled a selection of gifts intended to help people navigate the final stretch.
I will concede that this is a diverse assortment. Individuals cope with stress in various ways – some prefer gaming, cooking, exercise, or meditation. This compilation aims to present a range of devices and programs that may promote better sleep, lower blood pressure, and generally aid in successfully completing 2020.

Muse S

I utilized Muse’s newest headband extensively throughout CES, at a time when the event still appeared poised to be the most demanding period of the year. This device presents an innovative, game-like method for practicing meditation – a feature I’ve particularly valued, considering my difficulties with traditional meditation techniques. While the term “gamify” might seem unsuitable for an activity like meditation, Muse effectively assists in achieving a focused mental state.
The company has also recently incorporated sleep monitoring into the wearable’s functionality. I would note that the Muse S is reasonably comfortable for a technology-based headband (though the standard for such devices is admittedly not high), but becoming accustomed to sleeping while wearing it still requires adjustment.

Bose Sleepbuds II
While many excellent, general-use noise-cancelling headphones are available for relaxation, the Bose Sleepbuds II operate differently. These compact Bluetooth earbuds are specifically engineered for a single function: promoting sleep. They offer a comfortable fit, deliver reliable battery performance, and are designed to remain securely in the ear throughout the night. They are particularly effective in disruptive settings – ideal for short daytime rests or for those who share a bed with someone who snores.Although they represent a significant cost and lack broad functionality, being limited to playing back pre-installed soundscapes from Bose, they can be a worthwhile purchase for individuals experiencing difficulties with sleep onset or maintenance.

Calm subscription
While numerous meditation applications are currently available, Calm has consistently been my preferred choice. The application has experienced significant growth and popularity in recent years, achieving recognition with a high-profile program on HBO Max. Boasting over 90 million downloads, Calm provides a comprehensive selection of expertly designed meditation courses and audio tracks intended to promote relaxation and facilitate sleep.Price: $13 per month directly from Calm
Withings Sleep
I was quite impressed with this device prior to an unfortunate incident involving a pet damaging the power cable, which unfortunately stopped it from working. I anticipate this is an unusual circumstance for most individuals. The Withings Sleep is essentially a sensor pad placed beneath your mattress designed to monitor your sleep patterns throughout the night. The data gathered is then compiled and presented within the Withings Health application. Having evaluated numerous wearable sleep monitoring devices, I believe this is a worthwhile option for those seriously focused on tracking their sleep, particularly as it eliminates the need to wear a device during sleep. The Withings Sleep provides comprehensive monitoring capabilities, encompassing sleep cycles, heart rate analysis, and even snoring identification. Notably, it is among the initial consumer products to incorporate sleep apnea detection functionality.

Dreamlight Zen
I previously recommended Dreamlight masks when compiling travel-focused gift lists, specifically for use during extended flights. Despite current travel restrictions, I’ve personally found this product quite beneficial this year while navigating some personal health challenges. The Dreamlight Zen represents an advancement over previous versions, incorporating integrated features designed to promote both sleep and meditation, and offering up to 10 hours of operation on a single charge.Price: $200 directly from Dreamlight
