general motors finally gets serious about in-car tech, taps unreal engine for next-gen interface

The forthcoming GMC Hummer EV is set to debut with a cutting-edge in-vehicle user interface utilizing the Unreal Engine. This sophisticated platform, renowned for powering contemporary video games, is ideally positioned to deliver a highly responsive and immersive experience for those inside the vehicle.

Epic Games revealed this information yesterday during the presentation of its newest development resources for its human-machine interface initiative.

The reality is this: General Motors’ present in-car user interfaces are considered among the least impressive currently available. Despite being a major global automotive manufacturer, the infotainment systems in Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac vehicles consistently fall short of expectations.

In comparison to other automakers, GM’s vehicle systems are often perceived as sluggish, uninspired, and lacking the sophisticated functionalities offered by the competition.

Unreal Engine is a robust and capable platform that should equip GM’s development teams with the necessary resources to integrate the latest features and interfaces that consumers are seeking.

According to Epic Games, the creators of Unreal Engine, the platform provides a complete suite of development tools designed to streamline the process for designers and engineers.

This development reinforces the idea that the Hummer EV represents a crucial vehicle for General Motors. The project was initially introduced in early 2020 with a commercial during the Super Bowl, and details regarding the electric vehicle have been limited since then.

It remains unknown whether GM plans to incorporate Unreal Engine into other models within its lineup.
