Russian Basketball Player Arrested on Ransomware Allegations
A professional basketball player from Russia has been taken into custody by French law enforcement. The arrest stems from accusations of involvement with a ransomware group, as reported by Agence France-Presse (AFP).
Details of the Arrest
Daniil Kasatkin, currently playing for MBA Moscow within the VTB United League, is the individual in question. This league primarily features Russian basketball clubs, with additional representation from Belarus and Kazakhstan.
Prior to his current team, Kasatkin had a short stint with Penn State University’s basketball program during the 2018-2019 season.
Allegations by U.S. Authorities
According to reports, U.S. officials suspect Kasatkin engaged in cybercrime activities as a ransomware hacker alongside his athletic career.
The arrest occurred on June 21st at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, France.
Defense Statement
Kasatkin’s legal counsel, Frederic Belot, has asserted his client’s innocence. Belot stated that Kasatkin maintains he has done nothing wrong.
“He purchased a second-hand computer and is entirely unaware of any illicit activity,” Belot conveyed to AFP. “He is understandably shocked by these accusations.”
Claims Regarding Computer Skills
Belot further emphasized Kasatkin’s limited technical abilities. He claims his client struggles with basic computer tasks.
“He possesses minimal computer skills; he even has difficulty installing applications,” Belot explained. “He did not interact with the computer’s contents, suggesting it was either compromised or sold to him by someone attempting to conceal their identity.”
