Free Computer Speedup - Optimize Performance

A History of Computer Maintenance
In 2002, my computer's performance was severely impacted. It was overwhelmed by numerous startup programs, temporary files, cookies, and outdated registry entries. Viruses and spyware were also prevalent issues. The Windows Recycle Bin was consistently full, and the Clipboard was constantly overloaded.
Having only recently begun extensively using the internet, I enthusiastically downloaded and installed a wide variety of software. I was, admittedly, quite naive and made poor choices regarding downloads, such as executable email attachments.
The Turning Point
A near-catastrophic virus infection that almost resulted in hard drive failure prompted a significant change in my approach. I realized the need for stricter security measures and a more organized system. Since then, I’ve been diligent about maintaining a clean and efficient computer.
Currently, I ensure that specific programs are updated daily and utilized at least every other day. Thankfully, I haven't experienced a computer virus in four years, nor a spyware infection in two.
Essential Freeware for System Optimization
I also prioritize speed optimization, constantly tweaking settings to enhance performance.
AVG Anti-Virus
Many users automatically choose paid antivirus solutions like Norton, but I believe the free AVG Anti-Virus is superior. Grisoft, the developer, provides both free and paid versions, with the free version offering sufficient protection.
Throughout four years of use, AVG has consistently prevented and quarantined viruses instantly upon detection. The program receives daily updates and allows for scheduled system scans.
Furthermore, AVG integrates seamlessly with Windows Explorer, enabling on-demand file scanning before opening. It also offered valuable protection within Microsoft Outlook by scanning incoming emails, effectively blocking malicious attachments.
For comprehensive, 24/7 protection, I highly recommend AVG Anti-Virus. It has proven to be a lifesaver on numerous occasions.
Ad-Aware 2007
I have long been a supporter of Ad-Aware, however, I am less enthusiastic about the recent 2007 release. The older versions were known for their stability and speed, whereas the 2007 version feels slower and experiences frequent disconnections from Lavasoft servers.
I hope these are merely initial issues that will be quickly addressed. My experience with Spybot Search & Destroy was far more problematic, as it inadvertently damaged my operating system by removing critical registry files.
Ad-Aware is updated daily and can be used to scan for spyware on your system.
CCleaner
The additional "c" in CCleaner stands for "crap," a fitting name considering its effectiveness at removing unnecessary files. It eliminates temporary files, browser history, cookies, caches, and redundant registry entries.
Users can select which items to remove, and CCleaner handles the rest quickly and efficiently. Before modifying the registry, it offers the option to create a backup file for safety.
I began using CCleaner six weeks ago and was immediately impressed, quickly switching from EasyCleaner. A new beta version is now available, allowing it to be run as a portable program from a USB drive for cleaning other computers.
Further details regarding other frequently used programs for maintaining optimal computer speed will be shared tomorrow.
