Foxconn Considers Vietnam for iPad & MacBook Production

Based on a report by Reuters, Foxconn may be relocating some production operations for certain iPad and MacBook devices away from China, in response to a request from Apple. These new production facilities will be located in Vietnam.
A recent report by The Information emphasized the close relationship between these two corporations. Foxconn serves as Apple’s primary manufacturing partner, while Apple represents the vast majority of Foxconn’s business. Specifically, Foxconn is responsible for the production of between 60% and 70% of all iPhones, Apple’s flagship product.
In recent years, Apple has pursued a strategy to broaden its supply chain through two primary avenues. Initially, Apple has been actively seeking collaboration with alternative manufacturing firms, including Luxshare Precision Industry and Wistron.
Furthermore, Apple is working to establish manufacturing operations in a wider range of countries. This effort has been accelerated by the implementation of new tariffs and import regulations.
Reuters reports that Apple has requested Foxconn to transfer a portion of its iPad and MacBook assembly work to Vietnam. This new assembly line is anticipated to become operational sometime in the first six months of 2021.
Beyond Vietnam, Foxconn currently manufactures iPhone 11 units at a facility situated near Chennai, India. Wistron also handles iPhone assembly in India, and Foxconn has previously produced certain iPhone models in Brazil.
