Formula E Unveils the Gen3: A New Era of Electric Racing

Formula E has recently revealed its next-generation race car, asserting it to be the most efficient racing vehicle on the planet. Teams are scheduled to utilize the third-generation (Gen3) electric car during the 2022-23 season. Testing of this innovative vehicle is anticipated to commence in the spring.

Enhanced Efficiency and Regenerative Braking

The Gen3 boasts a lighter and more compact design compared to its predecessor, the Gen2. Formula E, in collaboration with the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), states that a minimum of 40 percent of the energy consumed during a race will be generated through regenerative braking. This marks a significant advancement in energy recovery.

Notably, the Gen3 will be the first formula car to eliminate rear hydraulic brakes, relying entirely on regenerative braking systems. This demonstrates a commitment to innovative and sustainable racing technology.

Dual Powertrain and Increased Power

A groundbreaking feature of the Gen3 is its implementation of powertrains at both the front and rear axles. The rear powertrain delivers 350kW of power, while a 250kW powertrain is situated at the front.

Combined, these powertrains generate a total of 600kW, exceeding the regenerative capabilities of the Gen2 by a factor of two. This substantial increase in regenerative power contributes to the car’s overall efficiency.

Performance Specifications

The Gen3’s motor is capable of producing up to 350kW of power, equivalent to 470 brake horsepower. It also achieves a top speed of 200mph.

According to Formula E and the FIA, the power-to-weight ratio of the Gen3 is twice as efficient as that of a comparable combustion engine. This highlights the potential of electric racing to deliver high performance with reduced environmental impact.

Sustainability was a key consideration in the design of the Gen3. The vehicle is designed to be net-zero carbon.

Broken carbon fiber components will undergo recycling processes, and the tires will incorporate 26 percent sustainable materials. These initiatives underscore Formula E’s dedication to environmentally responsible racing.

Statements from Formula E Leadership

“In designing the Gen3 car, we set out to demonstrate that high performance, efficiency and sustainability can co-exist without compromise,” stated Formula E CEO Jamie Reigle. “Together with the FIA, we have built the world’s most efficient and sustainable high performance race car.”

Reigle further emphasized that the Gen3 represents the fastest, lightest, most powerful, and most efficient racing car developed to date.

Anticipation for the Full Reveal

While Formula E has not yet fully unveiled the Gen3’s design, only releasing a series of teaser images, a complete reveal is expected soon. With teams preparing for testing in the coming months, a detailed look at the vehicle is anticipated shortly.
