Ford Invests $316M in UK for Electric Power Unit Production

Ford Invests $316 Million in UK Facility for EV Component Production
Ford Motor Company is making a substantial investment of $316 million (equivalent to £230 million) to convert its vehicle transmission plant located in Halewood, U.K., into a facility dedicated to the production of electric power units.
This initiative will establish Ford’s inaugural in-house assembly location for electric vehicle components within Europe.
Government Support and Job Preservation
The investment is contingent upon, and incorporates approximately $42 million (£30 million) in funding from the U.K. government, channeled through the Automotive Transformation Fund, as reported by The Times.
This financial commitment is projected to safeguard around 500 automotive jobs within the local community.
Electrification Strategy and European Sales
The power units manufactured at this plant will be utilized in all-electric passenger and commercial vehicles marketed throughout Europe.
This move directly supports the company’s objectives to accelerate its transition to electric vehicles.
Earlier this year, Ford declared its intention to exclusively offer electric vehicles for sale in Europe by 2030, and to limit production in Europe to electric commercial vehicles by 2024.
A $1 billion investment was previously allocated to modernize an assembly plant in Cologne, Germany.
Ford anticipates that electric models will represent approximately two-thirds of its total sales volume in Europe.
Understanding the Electric Power Unit
The power unit serves as the replacement for the traditional engine and transmission found in internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.
Its primary function is to regulate the flow of electrical energy supplied by the battery.
It also controls the speed of the electric motor and the amount of torque generated.
Ford projects that power unit production at the Halewood facility will commence in mid-2024, with an anticipated annual capacity of around 250,000 units.
The automaker has not yet disclosed whether these power units will be shipped to the Cologne facility or other locations for final assembly.
Halewood’s Export History
Historically, the Halewood factory has exported its entire production output.
This has positioned Ford as one of the U.K.’s leading exporters of engines and transmissions, supplying facilities in “over 15 countries across six continents.”
Overseas sales currently generate approximately £2.5 billion ($3.5 billion) in revenue annually for the company.
Government Statement
Kwasi Kwarteng, the U.K. government’s business secretary and a member of parliament, stated: “In this highly competitive, global race to secure electric vehicle manufacturing, our priority is to ensure the U.K. reaps the benefits.”
He further added that the announcement, backed by government funding, demonstrates significant confidence in the U.K.’s economic prospects and its plans to increase electric vehicle production.
Kwarteng believes this will secure the future of Halewood’s industrial heritage and provide high-skilled, well-compensated jobs in the North West for years to come.
Global Expansion of Ford’s EV Capabilities
Ford’s expansion of its electric capabilities extends beyond Europe.
The automaker has allocated $30 billion for investment by 2025.
Recent progress in China has resulted in the commencement of production of the Mustang Mach-E within the country.
The first Mustang Mach-E manufactured in China recently rolled off the assembly line.
Chinese customers will gain access to the locally produced Mach-E before the year’s end through Ford’s direct sales network of EV city stores.
Ford intends to open 25 stores in major metropolitan areas this year, with plans to expand to over 100 stores within the next five years.
