ford bets on google cloud for its digital transformation

Google and Ford jointly revealed a new collaboration focused on integrating Android Automotive into Ford and Lincoln vehicles, beginning in 2023. Simultaneously, the companies declared Ford’s selection of Google Cloud as its primary cloud services provider.
According to Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian, speaking at a press conference today, “Google Cloud will enable Ford to undergo a complete digital transformation, spanning from administrative functions to vehicle capabilities and the factory floor.” He further explained that this encompasses a variety of applications, including the modernization of product creation, enhancements to manufacturing and supply chain operations, the implementation of computer vision AI for staff training, and the inspection of assembly line machinery, among other uses.
Kurian also highlighted that Google and Ford are collaborating to identify innovative methods for generating revenue from Ford’s data assets, such as through services like maintenance notifications and trade-in recommendations.
David McClelland, Ford’s Vice President of Strategy and Partnerships, stated, “Ford possesses exceptional internal data analysis and insights capabilities. We have successfully recruited substantial software talent and are achieving significant advancements in this field. We are also progressing quickly toward the commercial launch of our new autonomous driving venture. This announcement from Thomas [Kurian] and myself will significantly accelerate all of these efforts.”
McClelland emphasized that Google “committed the full scope of its resources to this partnership, encompassing cloud services, Android, Maps, and more.” Given Google’s established expertise in these areas, it is unsurprising that Ford intends to utilize Google Cloud’s artificial intelligence tools. This initiative will extend beyond the in-vehicle experience to include improvements to Ford’s product development, manufacturing, and supply chain processes, as well as predictive maintenance within Ford’s facilities.
Similar to other automotive manufacturers, Ford is exploring ways to leverage the data it gathers to establish a lasting relationship with its customers, extending beyond the initial purchase and potentially infrequent service appointments. Achieving this requires a thorough understanding of customer needs and the delivery of customized experiences.
This announcement represents a shift in strategy for Ford, which previously joined forces with other automakers with the specific intention of limiting Google’s influence within the automotive sector. Now, just a few years later, the two companies are forging a comprehensive partnership, one of the most significant in the industry.
It is also noteworthy that Ford previously maintained a substantial partnership with Microsoft, which served as the foundation for Ford’s Sync technology.
“From the pioneering moving assembly line to the latest advancements in driver-assistance technology, Ford has consistently led innovation in the automotive industry for almost 120 years,” remarked Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet. “We are pleased to collaborate and apply the strengths of Google’s AI, data analytics, computing power, and cloud
platforms to help reshape Ford’s business and develop automotive technologies that prioritize safety and connectivity for drivers.”
