following its acquisition by buzzfeed, huffpost shuts down its brazil and india editions

HuffPost is now operating as part of BuzzFeed, however, the HuffPost India and HuffPost Brasil platforms will not be included in this change – both are ceasing operations effective today.
Aman Sethi, the editor in chief of the HuffPost India team, announced on Twitter that today marks the final day for @huffpostIndia. He stated that, in terms of reporting and journalistic quality, this was the most exceptional newsroom he has ever been a part of, expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to have led it. He also thanked readers for their support and engagement with their reporting.
BuzzFeed revealed last week that it was acquiring HuffPost as part of a larger agreement involving Verizon Media, the parent company of TechCrunch. This arrangement will involve the two companies working together on content sharing and advertising initiatives.
Verizon Media confirmed the immediate closure of HuffPost’s operations in both India and Brazil, and expressed appreciation for the dedication and contributions of the HuffPost India and HuffPost Brazil teams.
According to a tweet from Maxwell Tani of The Daily Beast, BuzzFeed CEO Jonah Peretti shared an internal message explaining that the company was “legally prevented from assuming control of the Brazil and India editions.” He explained that regulations in India prevent foreign ownership of news organizations, and that conditions related to the sale of BuzzFeed Brasil restrict BuzzFeed’s ability to operate within Brazil.
