Fellow Raises $24M to Revolutionize Meetings

The Rise of Hybrid Meetings and Fellow's Solution

With the increasing return to office environments, meetings are now frequently conducted in a hybrid format, accommodating both in-person and remote participants. Fellow is a platform designed to empower managers in facilitating productive meetings, regardless of their team's location.

The Cost of Inefficient Meetings

Aydin Mirzaee, co-founder and CEO of Fellow, shared with TechCrunch that unproductive meetings – those better suited for email communication – result in an estimated $37 billion in annual losses for U.S. businesses. He posits that truly effective meetings center around collaborative agendas, documented histories, and a structured process.

The shift to remote work has fundamentally altered the meeting landscape. Previously, devices were largely absent from in-person meetings, but now, every meeting is conducted with technology. This evolution has created a demand for dedicated meeting software.

Established in 2017, Fellow offers a unified suite of tools to support all meeting types. The company operates on a SaaS model, providing a free plan alongside tiered subscriptions for expanded user access and organizational capabilities.

Key features include customizable agenda templates, streamlined action item tracking, analytical insights into meeting frequency, and seamless integrations with popular virtual meeting platforms for efficient note-taking.

Significant Growth and Customer Base

Fellow’s customer roster includes prominent companies like Shopify, Hopin, and GoCardless. Over the past year, the company has experienced a threefold increase in both its customer base and the number of meetings hosted on its platform.

Furthermore, over 2 million meeting agendas and notes have been recorded through Fellow, and the company anticipates a fourfold increase in revenue this year, according to Mirzaee.

Series A Funding and Future Plans

To sustain its growth, Fellow recently secured $24 million in Series A funding. Craft Ventures spearheaded the round, with participation from iNovia, Felicis, Garage Ventures, Formentera, and SVB.

These funds will be allocated to product development, infrastructure enhancements, and expansion of the sales, marketing, and customer success teams. This investment brings the company’s total funding to $30.5 million.

Market Opportunity

The global virtual meeting software market is projected to reach $41.6 billion by 2027. Simultaneously, the global productivity management software market was valued at $43 billion in 2020 and is expected to grow at a rate of 14% annually through 2028.

Competition and Fellow's Unique Approach

This burgeoning market has attracted numerous startups, including:

  • Hera, a virtual meeting calendar
  • Read AI, a meeting dashboard focused on engagement
  • Vowel, a platform designed to enhance meetings before, during, and after

While acknowledging the competitive landscape, Mirzaee emphasizes that Fellow distinguishes itself through its purpose-built approach to meeting productivity. Fellow aims to provide a comprehensive solution for managers to conduct effective meetings and manage their teams.

Lainy Painter, partner at Craft Ventures, highlights Fellow’s ability to gain traction within organizations, expanding rapidly from initial team adoption. She notes that the meeting workflow has remained largely unoptimized in the shift to remote work.

Painter, a user of the tool herself, believes Fellow is poised to become a leader in the meeting management category. She emphasizes the need for new tools that leverage the benefits of remote work, rather than simply replicating existing paradigms.
