Life360 Launches 'Bubbles' - TikTok-Inspired Location Sharing

The rise of family-tracking applications, such as Life360, marked a shift from traditional helicopter parenting to a new era of digital surveillance. While these apps can offer reassurance to parents regarding the whereabouts of younger children, Life360’s teenage user base expressed significant dissatisfaction with its location-tracking capabilities, quickly transforming their frustrations into a popular TikTok trend. Despite the fact that teenagers are not the app’s direct customers—parents are—Life360 CEO Chris Hulls adopted an unconventional strategy. He established a presence on TikTok and initiated a conversation with the app’s younger demographic. This engagement ultimately led to the development and release of a new privacy-focused feature called “Bubbles.”

Bubbles function by enabling any member of a Life360 Circle to share a generalized location area, rather than their precise position. Users can define a bubble’s radius on the map, ranging from 1 to 25 miles, for a duration of 1 to 6 hours. While Life360’s existing safety and messaging functionalities remain active, parents will only be able to determine that their teen is somewhere within the designated bubble.

However, without deactivating the bubble, parents would remain unaware of whether their teenager is actually at a friend’s home, driving, visiting a park, or shopping. The intention is to foster open communication between parents and teens, rather than relying on constant monitoring. Furthermore, parents should acknowledge that teenagers require increasing independence and the opportunity to make their own decisions, even if those decisions occasionally lead to consequences.

However, a location bubble is not permanent. The company states that the bubble will automatically deactivate if a car accident or other emergency situation is detected. Additionally, a parent retains the ability to override the setting and disable the bubble if they have concerns, such as prolonged lack of communication or suspicion of unsafe behavior. This feature may encourage teenagers to proactively communicate with their parents to alleviate concerns and prevent the re-activation of full tracking.

The app actively discourages parents from prematurely disabling bubbles based on apprehension. Before a bubble is deactivated, the app prompts the user to confirm their decision, also notifying the member whose bubble is being burst. This pause allows parents to reconsider whether deactivation is truly necessary, balancing safety concerns with their teen’s privacy and trust. This type of behavioral prompting is commonly found in leading social media applications.

Instead, it represents a middle ground in the ongoing debate between parental oversight and the need for adolescent autonomy.

Hulls explains that the concept for this new feature originated from discussions he had with teenagers on TikTok regarding their concerns with Life360.

“Teenagers are an integral part of the family structure—and our user base—and we highly value their perspectives,” Hulls stated. “Following months of dialogue with both parents and teens, I am pleased to introduce a feature designed with the entire family in mind, furthering our commitment to redefining family safety,” he continued.

Prior to engaging on TikTok, the Life360 mobile app experienced a campaign of negative ratings from teen users, who assigned one-star reviews in an attempt to have the app removed from the App Store. This tactic is frequently employed by teens and students to express dissatisfaction with applications. (While low ratings do not automatically result in app removal, it has not deterred teens from attempting this strategy with apps they dislike, including Google Classroom and the Trump 2020 app.)

In his initial TikTok appearance, Hulls portrayed Darth Vader before removing the mask and identifying himself as “just your standard, awkward tech CEO.” Since then, his account has shared and responded to Life360 memes, answered questions, and solicited—and even compensated for—valuable user feedback. The idea for “ghost mode,” now known as “Bubbles,” emerged from this collaboration, with the feature’s name selected through a TikTok contest.

Beyond gathering ideas on TikTok, Hulls utilized the platform to improve the Life360 brand image among teenagers, recounting how he created the app following Hurricane Katrina to facilitate family reconnection during emergencies (a factual account). His videos also conveyed a sense of alignment with teen perspectives and suggested that developing “ghost mode” might alienate parents or even jeopardize his position.

Concurrently, the company released a YouTube parody video to illustrate the app’s benefits to both parents and teens. This video, promoted to teen users via a notification, garnered over a million views within 24 hours.

Some teenagers responded positively. “I’m genuinely touched by how kind he seems,” one commenter wrote. “Honestly, the issue is with the parents, not the app,” another admitted. Hulls’ “life360ceo” TikTok account has since amassed over 231,000 followers, and its videos have received 6.5 million likes. Teens have largely redirected their criticism towards parents who engage in excessive monitoring, rather than the technology that enables it.

Bubbles is now integrated into the latest version of the Life360 app, available for free download on iOS and Android. The company also offers optional premium subscriptions with additional features, such as location history, crash detection, and roadside assistance.

The market for family trackers is substantial and continues to grow. As of June 2020, Life360 had 25 million monthly active users across more than 195 countries. The company’s annualized monthly revenue was projected at $77.9 million, representing a 26% year-over-year increase.

To commemorate the launch of Bubbles, Life360 initiated a branded Hashtag Challenge on TikTok, #ghostmode, offering a $10,000 prize. As of today, the hashtag has accumulated 1.4 billion views.
