David Marcus, Facebook's Crypto Head, to Leave Company

Meta's Crypto Lead Announces Departure
The parent organization of Facebook, Meta, is set to lose its leading executive in the cryptocurrency sector later this year.
David Marcus, who currently directs Meta’s crypto division, Novi, and formerly oversaw the Messenger application, revealed on Tuesday his plans to leave the company in the coming months.
Marcus initially joined Facebook in 2014. This departure signifies another significant change within Facebook’s long-standing leadership team; previously, in September, Facebook’s Chief Technology Officer, Mike Schroepfer, announced his resignation after a 13-year tenure.
Succession at Novi
Stephane Kasriel, the former CEO of Upwork and previously the Head of Product for Novi, will assume Marcus’s responsibilities at the helm of the organization.
Marcus's Background in Crypto
Marcus has been a prominent figure within the crypto community for a considerable period, dating back to his time as president of PayPal.
During his tenure at PayPal, he was an early adopter of Bitcoin and other digital currencies among technology leaders.
He has also previously held a position on the board of directors at Coinbase.
Challenges with Diem and Novi
Marcus’s leadership of Meta’s crypto initiatives has largely been characterized by obstacles.
The company’s Diem cryptocurrency project faced substantial resistance from both the industry and regulatory bodies, leading to a reduction in the speed of new developments in the crypto space.
Earlier this year, Meta initiated a limited trial of its cryptocurrency wallet, Novi, enabling users in the United States and Guatemala to exchange “stablecoin” cryptocurrencies through the application.
Future Ventures
Marcus has indicated a potential move towards launching his own entrepreneurial endeavor.
“Despite the ongoing work following the launch of Novi – and my continued belief in the necessity for innovation in payments and financial systems – my inherent entrepreneurial drive has been consistently prompting me to explore new opportunities,” Marcus stated in a series of posts on Twitter.
He added that he could no longer ignore this persistent inclination.
