Facebook Opens Messenger API for Instagram to All

Instagram Integration with Messenger API Now Available to All Businesses

Facebook’s annual developer conference, F8 Refresh, is scheduled to begin today, and preceding the event, a significant update has been revealed. All businesses are now empowered to utilize the Messenger API for direct interaction with users on Instagram. This functionality is initially being released to developers worldwide, followed by a staged rollout for businesses.

Phased Implementation for Businesses

The initial phase will grant Instagram accounts boasting between 10,000 and 100,000 followers access to the API. Expansion is planned for phase 2 in July, encompassing accounts with follower counts ranging from 1,000 to 100,000.

Full availability for all remaining accounts is anticipated by the third quarter of the year.

From Beta to General Access

This feature was initially introduced as a closed beta program in October, involving 30 developers and 700 brands. Now, any organization or brand leveraging Instagram for customer engagement can benefit from this integration.

A Step Forward for Platform Leverage

This integration signifies a substantial advancement in how companies can effectively utilize the broader Facebook ecosystem.

Previously, brands seeking to connect with customers were limited to direct interaction through Instagram or Facebook’s unified business inbox. These methods presented constraints, particularly for businesses managing high traffic volumes or desiring integration with comprehensive customer service databases.

The Power of the Messenger API

The Messenger API, conversely, can be seamlessly integrated into any third-party application a company employs for communication management.

This includes social media management platforms like Hootsuite or Sprinklr, as well as CRM applications capable of incorporating diverse customer data, such as warranty details or loyalty program information.

Beta Feedback Drives Expansion

Facebook highlighted that key insights from the closed beta revealed a demand for centralized communication management. Additionally, many companies are increasing their investment in software designed to streamline communications and workflows. Extending the Messenger API to Instagram directly addresses these needs.

Strategic Alignment with Instagram’s Growth

Expanding the Messenger API to Instagram aligns with Facebook’s broader strategy of maximizing the platform’s commercial potential. This began with advertising and has expanded to include brand-user conversations and enhanced shopping features.

Notably, 90% of Instagram users currently follow at least one business, making a more efficient communication channel a logical progression.

Unified Platform Vision

Furthermore, this move supports Facebook’s ongoing efforts to interconnect its various applications – including Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Oculus.

The goal is to facilitate seamless interaction for users and enable businesses to implement a more cohesive social strategy.

F8 Refresh Preview

The timing of this announcement, preceding F8 Refresh, may indicate Facebook’s primary focus for this year’s event: fostering partnerships to facilitate increased business activity across its platforms.
