Facebook Threads: New Twitter-Like Feature in Testing

Facebook Explores a Threaded Post Feature
Preparations may be underway for a new functionality on Facebook, potentially resembling the "threads" feature found on other social media platforms. The social network has been observed evaluating a system that allows prominent individuals to link new posts to earlier ones addressing similar topics.
This feature aims to create a more visually connected experience for followers, facilitating easier tracking of updates over time. When a new post within a thread appears in a user’s News Feed, it will be clearly indicated as being part of a larger conversation.
Initial Observations and Confirmation
The discovery of this test was initially made by social media analyst Matt Navarra, who shared screenshots illustrating the feature’s appearance. Facebook has since confirmed to TechCrunch that it is currently being tested with a limited group of public figures.
A “public figure” designation on Facebook refers to a specific Page category designed for individuals with high public profiles or those seeking to establish a more prominent online presence.
How the Threaded Posts Will Function
These threaded posts will incorporate a “View Post Thread” button. This button will enable followers to quickly access and review all posts within the connected sequence.
Upon selecting the button, users will be directed to a dedicated view showcasing all posts linked together in the thread.
Future Rollout Uncertain
Facebook has not yet confirmed whether this test will be expanded to include a wider range of public figures. Furthermore, the possibility of extending the feature to other Page categories, such as Businesses, or even Facebook Groups, remains unclear.
The Utility of Threading on Facebook
The concept of threads is particularly valuable on platforms like Twitter, where character limitations often necessitate fragmented conversations. This has led to the emergence of lengthy explanations shared outside the platform itself.
However, Facebook posts can extend to a considerable length – up to 63,206 characters. Therefore, the purpose of threads on Facebook may differ.
Instead of encouraging longer individual posts, Facebook threads could prove useful for real-time commentary during events, such as awards ceremonies.
Alternatively, users could utilize threads to provide updates to existing posts, avoiding the need to edit the original post and append a potentially disruptive “edited to add…” note.
Considering the initial testing phase focuses on public figures, it’s plausible that the intention is to streamline the dissemination of news and information.
Addressing Misinformation
Given Facebook’s past challenges with misinformation, this feature could offer a valuable tool for journalists and government officials to provide contextualized information regarding evolving news events.
This development follows Facebook’s recent announcement of its Bulletin newsletter platform.
