Syng Raises $48.75M - Ex-Apple Designer's Audio Startup

Syng, Founded by Former Apple Designer, Secures $48.75 Million in Funding

Audio technology startup Syng has garnered significant attention, exceeding that of many new hardware ventures. This is largely attributed to the expertise of its founding team.

Chris Stringer, the founder and CEO, previously served as Jony Ive’s initial hire at Apple, dedicating 21 years to the company.

The Vision Behind Syng’s “Triphonic” Audio

Stringer recounted that his first encounter with stereo audio was “the most impressive product demonstration ever experienced.” He envisions his company building upon this sensation by developing “triphonic” audio hardware.

The goal is to revolutionize the home listening experience through spatial audio technology. Stringer explained to TechCrunch, “We aim to transform the stage from a conventional stage/audience setup – essentially a visual representation – into expanding the stage to encompass the entire square footage of your home.”

Investment Details and Key Backers

Syng has successfully closed a $48.75 million Series A funding round, led by Eclipse Ventures, based in Palo Alto.

The list of investors also includes prominent figures such as Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger, musician Lionel Richie, and Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia. To date, the company has raised a total of $50 million.

Computational Audio and the Syng Cell Alpha

The company’s hardware utilizes computational audio technology, similar to that found in products like the HomePod. This allows the speakers to adapt to their surrounding environment.

However, Syng’s primary focus is spatial audio. Their inaugural product, the Syng Cell Alpha, is a premium speaker priced at $1,799. Its design evokes the aesthetic of mid-century modern spacecraft.

The product strongly reflects the Apple design philosophy, reminiscent of the Jony Ive-designed Harman Kardon SoundSticks. Stringer intends for it to be considered a furniture piece rather than a conventional, imposing tower speaker.

Dynamic Soundstage and Speaker Interaction

While a price of $1,799 for a single speaker is substantial, the full potential of the technology is realized through multiple units.

The Cell Alpha speakers are designed to interact, providing feedback and creating a dynamic soundstage for the user. A key benefit is the flexibility in speaker placement, allowing design preferences to guide positioning rather than strict acoustic requirements.

This approach aims to move away from audio systems centered around televisions and encourage a greater appreciation for music within the home.

Currently, the system supports up to four speakers within a single room. The Cell Alpha is available in a single configuration, but Stringer suggests that future products will be offered at varying price points and sizes.

A Sonos-Like Approach to High-End Audio

Traditionally, establishing a high-end audio system required professional installation and a complex network of speakers, cables, and receivers. Syng offers a more streamlined experience, akin to Sonos.

Their devices are designed to be integrated into the home as aesthetic objects, rather than being concealed or disguised.

Challenges and Market Considerations

Success in the consumer audio market is challenging for new entrants. The longevity of premium audio products means consumers expect long-term software support.

Furthermore, widespread adoption of spatial audio is currently limited, with most music streaming services offering minimal support. Stringer anticipates this will change as major companies like Apple actively promote the technology.

Additional Investors and Funding Allocation

Additional investors include Bridford Group, SIP Global Partners, Renegade Partners, Animal Capital, Schusterman Family Investments, Vince Zampella, and Alex Rigopoulos.

Stringer stated that the funding will be allocated to research and development for future hardware and software products.
