How to Make an EPUB File - iPad, Nook, Kobo & More

The Transition to Digital Reading
A shift is occurring where traditionally analog formats are being converted to digital ones, and books are experiencing this transformation. The rise of e-ink readers and tablets, such as the iPad, is leading an increasing number of individuals to embrace digital reading.
To maximize the reach of your written work, understanding how to prepare files for these devices is becoming essential.
Exploring ePub Creation Tools
Having served as the editor for the MakeUseOf Manuals project, this topic has been a significant focus of my recent research. I’ve been actively investigating the most effective tools available for generating ePub files.
While the learning process is ongoing, a foundational framework has been established.
Why Create ePub Files?
- Wider Accessibility: ePubs are compatible with a vast range of reading devices.
- Reflowable Text: The text adjusts to fit different screen sizes.
- Enhanced Reading Experience: Features like adjustable fonts and margins improve readability.
If you are interested in producing ePub files, you have arrived at a helpful resource.
The ability to format content for digital readers is no longer optional, but a crucial skill for authors seeking to connect with a larger readership.
Understanding ePubs
The ePub format represents an open standard widely adopted across a diverse range of devices for the presentation of books, periodicals, and magazines. Unlike fixed-layout PDFs, ePub is a reflowable format.
This means the content isn't fixed to specific pages with a predetermined layout. Instead, the reading device generates pages dynamically.
This dynamic page creation is the key feature enabling e-reader functionality like adjustable font sizes.
Compatible Devices
A wide array of devices supports ePub files, including:
- Apple’s iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch, utilizing the iBooks application.
- Android-powered devices, often through the FBreader application.
- The Barnes & Noble Nook e-reader.
- Sony’s line of dedicated e-readers.
- Kobo Reader devices.
- Computers running Windows, macOS, or Linux, with the aid of various software programs.
- A continually expanding number of other devices.
To maximize the reach of your publication, mastering the creation of ePub files is essential.
Ensuring compatibility with a broad spectrum of devices is crucial for authors and publishers.
Creating ePub Files from Common Software Applications
It’s highly probable that you already possess software on your system capable of generating ePub files, even if you are unaware of this functionality. For instance, InDesign offers the ability to export directly to the ePub format. This is particularly advantageous, as InDesign is a standard tool within the publishing industry, and many book creators are already familiar with its use.
Consider utilizing this export feature; it may provide a swift solution to your ePub creation needs.
Mac users will find that Pages, included in the iLife '09 suite, also supports ePub export. This is beneficial because Pages can readily open a wide variety of office documents, notably including files created in Microsoft Word.
Keep in mind that installing the most recent updates for iLife is a prerequisite to accessing this feature, but the convenience it offers makes it worthwhile.
While Pages is a powerful option, its availability is limited to Mac operating systems and requires a purchase. For those seeking a completely free solution, an Open Office plugin is available.
This plugin, when installed, enables the creation of ePub documents through Open Office's "Export" function, supporting Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms.
Although not without limitations – specifically, it doesn't support chapter creation – the plugin provides a functional method for ePub generation.
Currently, a comparable plugin does not exist for Microsoft Word. Fortunately, Word documents can be opened and subsequently converted using either Pages or Open Office.
Building eBooks: New Creation vs. Modification
Earlier this year, Jeffry brought attention to two cross-platform applications – Sigil and eCub – designed for iBooks authoring. Both are valuable resources when initiating an ePub project from the ground up, as detailed in a previous discussion.
However, it’s important to note a significant benefit of Sigil that wasn’t previously emphasized: its capability to modify pre-existing ePub files.
Leveraging Sigil for Refinement
Should the output generated by other conversion tools not meet your expectations, Sigil provides a straightforward method for implementing necessary adjustments.
While Sigil can also be employed to construct an ePub from scratch, its role as a corrective instrument is particularly noteworthy. Export processes often introduce formatting errors, making a dedicated cleanup tool essential.

Direct manual editing of ePub files is also achievable, given their fundamental structure as .zip archives containing HTML files.
Simply renaming a .epub file to .zip allows for direct access and modification of the internal files. This approach offers an excellent opportunity to understand the inner workings of the ePub format.
Resources for ePub Development
- Lexcycle provides a comprehensive guide on both creating and editing ePub files from scratch.
- Exploring this resource is highly recommended before undertaking extensive manual modifications.
Understanding the underlying structure will empower you to effectively troubleshoot and refine your ePub creations.
Calibre: A Comprehensive ePub Conversion Solution
For users encountering difficulties with ePub creation, Calibre presents itself as a highly effective ebook management application.
This software excels in its ability to transform a wide array of file formats into the ePub standard, making it an invaluable asset for digital book enthusiasts.
Key Features of Calibre
- Format Conversion: Calibre supports conversion from numerous formats to ePub.
- Ebook Management: It functions as a complete library management system for ebooks.
