Enable Vista Black Theme in Chrome on XP - How To

Transforming Google Chrome's Appearance on Windows XP
Users comparing screenshots of Google Chrome running on Windows XP and Vista may observe significant differences in the user interface. A customized approach allows XP users to adopt a more modern, black theme for their Chrome browser. This tip was originally shared by our reader, Jim, for which we are grateful!
For those unfamiliar with the default XP theme, consider the following. Conversely, here’s Google Chrome on XP after the ZOMBRE custom theme has been applied:

The resulting appearance closely resembles the sleekness found in the Vista theme.
Installing the Custom Theme
The first step involves downloading the patched theme file, accessible via the link provided at the end of this article. Following the download, open Windows Explorer and input the following path into the address bar:
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\0.2.149.27\Themes
Within this directory, you will find a file named 'default.dll'. It is crucial to create a backup copy of this file before proceeding.

Subsequently, paste the 'default.dll' file extracted from the theme’s zip archive into this directory. You will be prompted to confirm the overwriting of the existing file – ensure you have the backup readily available.

Upon completion, launching Chrome will display the newly applied theme.
Removing the Theme
To revert to the original appearance, simply delete the replaced 'default.dll' file. Then, rename your backup copy back to its original filename, 'default.dll'. This completes the removal process.
Important Considerations
It’s important to understand that these custom themes may require re-patching each time Google Chrome receives an update. Updates are often released, potentially requiring frequent adjustments. While we present this information for those interested in customization, we do not necessarily recommend its consistent use.
