Elon Musk Open to Tesla Acquiring Traditional Automaker

Elon Musk indicated he might explore the possibility of Tesla, with its substantial $554 billion market capitalization, acquiring an established automotive manufacturer, provided the acquisition was mutually agreeable, as he explained during a comprehensive discussion with Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner on Tuesday.

Musk, honored with an award by the media organization on Tuesday, shared insights into his diverse ventures and companies, prominently featuring SpaceX and Tesla, both under his leadership.

Döpfner pointed out that Tesla’s current market value significantly surpasses that of traditional automakers such as BMW, Daimler, and VW, companies that initially doubted Musk’s capacity to popularize electric vehicles. When questioned about the potential of purchasing one of these legacy automakers, Musk stated it wasn’t out of the question, but only under specific circumstances.

“We certainly wouldn’t initiate an unfriendly takeover attempt,” Musk clarified. “However, if a company proposed a merger with Tesla, expressing a belief that it would be beneficial, we would be open to discussing it. We are not interested in a hostile takeover scenario.”

Tesla currently enjoys a strong market position—though Musk reiterated his belief that its stock price is currently overvalued. The company, scheduled to be added to the S&P 500 Index on December 21, has become the world’s most valuable automaker, despite producing fewer vehicles each year than many of its competitors.

A significant portion of investment in Tesla stock stems from its perception as a technology firm rather than a traditional car manufacturer, despite the fact that the majority of its current income is derived from vehicle sales.

Musk recalled that automotive companies were initially dismissive of Tesla’s efforts.

“When we initially presented the Roadster in 2007, the general response was essentially that we were unrealistic and misguided,” Musk stated, noting that competitors now exhibit a much more positive attitude than they did previously.
