Ongoing Dispute Between Elon Musk and Sam Altman
A continuing public disagreement is unfolding between Elon Musk and Sam Altman, primarily on Musk’s social media platform, X.
Despite both individuals having foundational roles at OpenAI – with Altman currently serving as CEO – their relationship has become increasingly contentious, manifesting in exchanges across various channels.
Altman’s Initial Post and Refund Request
The latest series of interactions was initiated by Altman, who shared a narrative he termed “a tale in three acts.”
This account detailed his 2018 reservation of a Tesla Roadster, followed by a recent attempt to cancel the order and reclaim his $50,000 deposit.
Altman expressed his initial enthusiasm for the vehicle, stating, “I really was excited for the car!” He acknowledged potential delays but noted that a 7.5-year wait seemed excessive.
Roadster Delays and Musk’s Response
The next-generation Roadster was originally unveiled in November 2017, but its release has faced numerous postponements.
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, recently indicated that an updated version of the Roadster will be presented before the year’s end.
Musk’s initial response to Altman’s post was a direct accusation: “You stole a nonprofit.”
This criticism echoes previous claims made by Musk against Altman and OpenAI, appearing in both social media posts, legal filings, and attempts to prevent OpenAI’s transition to a for-profit structure.
Legal Battles and Counter-Accusations
Musk has since established xAI, a competing AI startup, and is currently involved in a lawsuit against OpenAI and Apple.
The suit alleges collusion between the two companies to suppress competition.
Altman countered these allegations, suggesting Musk’s behavior on X raises similar concerns regarding self-promotion and harm to competitors.
Musk’s Claim of Resolution
Beyond reiterating his criticisms, Musk asserted that Altman’s account of events was incomplete.
He claimed that the issue regarding the refund was resolved within 24 hours, stating, “And you forgot to mention act 4, where this issue was fixed and you received a refund within 24 hours.”
Musk concluded by attributing this omission to Altman’s character.
