Mate Rimac to Speak at TC Sessions: Mobility 2021

From Garage Startup to Global EV Leader: The Rimac Story
Just ten years ago, Rimac Automobili began as a one-person venture operating from a garage. Today, this electric vehicle and technology firm, established by Mate Rimac, boasts a workforce exceeding 1,000 employees.
The company has forged strategic alliances with both Porsche and Hyundai Motor Group. Furthermore, it is poised to release its all-electric C_Two hypercar, capable of producing 1,914 horsepower, within the current year.
Expanding Beyond Hypercars: The Greyp Bikes Initiative
Rimac’s innovation extends beyond high-performance vehicles. The company also launched Greyp Bikes, a subsidiary dedicated to the production of electrically assisted bicycles.
This expansion is particularly noteworthy considering Mate Rimac’s origins: converting a 1984 BMW into an electric vehicle that once held the record for the world’s fastest.
Overcoming Initial Obstacles in Croatia
“A decade ago, I was essentially working alone in a garage, situated in Croatia—a region lacking a robust technology or industrial base,” Mate Rimac shared in a recent TechCrunch interview.
“The circumstances were challenging; I lacked access to venture capital, a thriving startup ecosystem, or even readily available talent and infrastructure. We faced a constant struggle for survival, focusing on covering expenses month to month.”
He continued, explaining that the initial six to seven years were largely dedicated to ensuring the company’s continued operation, and securing funding for payroll and rent.
Securing Investment and Achieving Profitability
Despite these early hurdles, Rimac successfully attracted investment from Porsche and Hyundai. Importantly, the company also achieved revenue generation and profitability from its inception.
Future Plans: A New Headquarters and Expanded Production
Mate Rimac’s vision for the future remains ambitious. He recently unveiled plans for a new headquarters in Croatia.
This complex will feature an on-site test track, a dedicated research and development and production facility, a museum, employee amenities like a gym and daycare, and even on-site organic food production and animal farming.
Expected to be completed by 2023, the facility will enable Rimac to scale up production of its high-performance electric drivetrains and battery systems for clients including Porsche, Hyundai-Kia, SEAT, Renault, and Pininfarina.
