Chevrolet Equinox & Blazer EVs: Coming in 2023

General Motors Expands Chevrolet's Electric Vehicle Lineup

During her presentation at the 2022 CES tech trade show on Wednesday, General Motors CEO and Chair Mary Barra announced the addition of two new all-electric SUV models to the Chevrolet brand by 2023. This expansion complements the forthcoming Silverado EV WT pickup truck.

New Electric SUVs: Equinox and Blazer

The automaker revealed plans to commence sales of electric iterations of the Chevrolet Equinox and Chevrolet Blazer in 2023. These additions signify a significant step in GM’s electrification strategy.

“Chevy, being our most popular brand, will be central to our objective of making EVs accessible to all,” Barra stated. “We are approaching a pivotal moment in the shift to electric vehicles and anticipate a substantial year for Chevrolet’s electric future.”

Silverado EV: Work Truck and Luxury Models

Chevrolet is preparing to launch the Silverado Work Truck (WT) in spring 2023. A more premium luxury model, the Silverado RST, will follow in 2024.

Both the WT and RST trims are projected to offer an estimated range of 400 miles. They will also feature standard DC fast-charging capabilities, reaching up to 350 kilowatts.

While the Silverado launch was anticipated, Wednesday marked the first instance of the company sharing detailed information and initial images of other upcoming Chevrolet electric vehicles.

Equinox EV: Affordable and Functional

Chevrolet intends to broaden its EV portfolio in fall 2023 with the introduction of the Equinox EV. This compact SUV is designed to be both affordable and practical, with an estimated MSRP starting around $30,000 in the United States.

The Equinox EV will be available in both fleet and retail versions, encompassing LT and RS trims.

Blazer EV: Refinement and Options

Barra also confirmed the arrival of the Chevrolet Blazer in 2023 (as a 2024 model). Further details regarding the Blazer will be disclosed later in the year.

She added that the Blazer will be competitively priced and will deliver a high degree of refinement alongside a variety of options.

Expanding the Chevrolet EV Family

The Equinox, Blazer, and Silverado will join the existing Bolt and Bolt EUV models within the Chevrolet EV lineup. All these new EVs will be built upon GM’s Ultium EV platform.

The Ultium Platform: A Foundation for the Future

GM unveiled its Ultium electric architecture in March 2020. This architecture was conceived as the cornerstone of the company’s future EV initiatives.

It is designed to support a diverse range of vehicles across all GM brands, including compact cars, work trucks, large premium SUVs, and high-performance vehicles.

This modular architecture, known as “Ultium,” allows for 19 different battery and drive unit configurations. It supports both 400-volt and 800-volt packs with energy storage ranging from 50 kWh to 200 kWh.

Furthermore, it accommodates front-, rear-, and all-wheel drive configurations.

The core of this new modular architecture consists of large-format pouch battery cells. These cells are produced through a joint venture between LG Chem and GM.

Other GM Electric Vehicle Initiatives

Chevrolet isn’t the sole GM brand introducing EVs in the coming years. Deliveries of the GMC Hummer EV pickup truck have already begun.

The Hummer EV SUV is slated for release in 2023, and an electric GMC Sierra is anticipated to enter the market, potentially also in 2023.

GM’s luxury brand, Cadillac, is launching the Lyriq this year.
