Ed Sheeran's Favorite Pokémon Revealed - It's Squirtle!

Ed Sheeran and Pokémon GO: A Surprising Collaboration

A puzzling message from Ed Sheeran surfaced on Twitter two days prior, alluding to an upcoming partnership with Pokémon GO. While I don't personally consider myself a devoted fan of Ed Sheeran, the hashtag #PokemonGOxEdSheeran certainly caught my attention.

Following standard journalistic practice, I reached out to a contact at Niantic, requesting information regarding the announcement – under embargo, naturally.

The response received indicated that details were not yet available for release, but assured me I would be informed as soon as possible.

Details of the In-Game Event

Today, Pokémon GO officially unveiled its collaboration with Ed Sheeran. The partnership will feature an in-app performance by the artist, with further specifics to be revealed on November 22nd, coinciding with the event’s commencement.

Currently, it’s known that Sheeran’s track, “Overpass Graffiti,” will be played nightly throughout the event duration. Additionally, players will have access to exclusive Ed Sheeran-themed apparel for their avatars.

The Pokémon GO celebration of Ed Sheeran is scheduled to run until November 30th. During this period, players can anticipate increased encounters with wild spawns of Water-type starter Pokémon from the initial five generations: Squirtle (sporting sunglasses!), Totodile, Mudkip, Oshawott, and Froakie.

A stated preference for Water-type Pokémon is highlighted in a blog post from the application: “Ed consistently selects the Water-type Pokémon as his starting partner in Pokémon role-playing games.”

Further clarification on Twitter from Pokémon GO confirmed that Ed Sheeran not only consistently chooses the Water starter but also identifies Squirtle as his favorite Pokémon.

The PR Angle: Authenticity or Strategy?

Having previously interned at a music public relations firm, I can offer some perspective. Ed Sheeran may cultivate an image of relatable simplicity, evoking nostalgia for the era of the Game Boy Color, but a dedicated team of publicity professionals meticulously manages his public persona.

Considering the immense success of his song “Shape of You” – the most streamed song globally – Sheeran possesses substantial resources. Therefore, is Squirtle genuinely his preferred Pokémon, or is this a strategically chosen detail for promotional purposes?

Squirtle’s widespread recognition makes it a safe and accessible choice, avoiding the obscurity of lesser-known Pokémon. Selecting a Pokémon like Cubone, known for its somber backstory, would be a poor marketing decision. Conversely, a niche pick like Bouffalant would likely fail to resonate with a broad audience.

Water-Types and Game Balance

Experienced Pokémon players recognize the inherent strength of Water-type Pokémon, particularly within the Kanto region. The first gym leader, Brock, specializes in Rock-type Pokémon.

Both Bulbasaur and Squirtle possess moves that are super-effective against Rock-types, while Charmander, a Fire-type, is vulnerable to Brock’s Onix. Battling Brock with Pikachu in Pokémon Yellow is notoriously difficult, as Thundershock is ineffective against Rock.
