WinGuard Pro: Easy Access Control & Security

Enhanced Access Control with WinGuard Pro
The Windows operating system has seen continuous advancements in its access control and parental control capabilities. For example, Windows 7 implemented many of these features effectively.
However, a common issue arises from the fact that not all features are included in every Windows 7 edition.
Even when available, these functionalities are often located within the complex structure of the Control Panel, which can be difficult for some users to navigate.
Introducing WinGuard Pro
WinGuard Pro aims to streamline these processes by consolidating numerous access control functions into a compact utility.
The software can be downloaded from here. The download is less than 1 MB in size and installation is quick.
A system restart is required after installation. Following the reboot, you can launch WinGuard Pro and begin utilizing its features.
Exploring the Configuration Tool
The primary interface for WinGuard Pro is its configuration tool.
Upon initial launch, the tool is secured with a default password: LETMEIN. Enter this password to gain access to the full range of WinGuard Pro’s functionalities.
Let's examine some of the key features offered by WinGuard Pro.
Feature Overview
After logging into the configuration tool, users are presented with a tabbed interface.
This interface provides organized access to all of WinGuard Pro’s capabilities.
The tabbed structure allows for easy navigation and management of the various security settings.
Restricting Application and Task Access
WinGuard Pro provides the capability to restrict access to particular applications, folders, or system tasks through its dedicated Tasks tab.
Simply select the checkbox corresponding to the application, feature, or folder you wish to secure, and WinGuard Pro will prevent standard users from accessing it.
Application Lockdown Example
For instance, if Notepad is selected for lockdown, any attempt to open it will prompt the user for a password before granting access.
A comprehensive range of options are available for restriction, easily enabled via checkboxes within this tab.
Available Restriction Options
These options encompass both security-focused features, such as the command prompt and System Restore, and parental control features like Windows Media Player and Messenger.
Security and parental controls are key considerations in the design of these access restrictions.
Key Features- Application Control: Prevent unauthorized program execution.
- Folder Security: Protect sensitive data within specific folders.
- Task Restriction: Limit access to critical system tasks.
The system offers granular control, allowing administrators to tailor access permissions to specific needs.
File and Folder Encryption
WinGuard Pro provides the capability to encrypt and decrypt both files and folders, offering users a customizable security solution.
It's important to note that this feature is not designed for full partition or USB drive encryption; for those needs, Truecrypt remains the recommended option.
However, if the requirement is to secure specific folders without the complexity of comprehensive encryption software, WinGuard Pro offers a streamlined approach.
Simple Encryption Process
The process is straightforward: locate the folder intended for encryption and select it.
To access the encrypted files, utilize the Decrypt function, navigate to the folder, and enter the designated password.
This allows for focused security on sensitive data without requiring extensive configuration or a deep understanding of encryption protocols.
Restricting Specific Actions on Your Computer
Let's now examine the “More” tab within the software. This section allows you to restrict actions such as file downloads and software installations. Furthermore, specific Windows functionalities, including Task Manager and Windows Explorer, can be secured.
Controlling Access and Configuration
Beyond these features, additional options are available to refine how WinGuard Pro operates. For example, the Administrator account can be excluded from all access control measures.
This exclusion permits logging in as the administrator with full privileges, effectively bypassing WinGuard Pro’s restrictions. All accounts other than the Administrator are treated as Standard user accounts.
The Import/Export functionality facilitates the deployment of consistent configurations across multiple computers.

Overall Assessment
WinGuard Pro presents itself as a comprehensive and practical solution for access control, offering a robust set of features. However, it isn't without its drawbacks.
The user interface could benefit from significant improvements. For instance, when selecting a folder for encryption, a dedicated browse button would be intuitive. Currently, the label itself must be clicked to initiate the folder selection dialog.
All the functionalities previously discussed are included in the free version of the software. A premium version is also available, offering more granular control over application lockdown and folder encryption.
A 60-day trial of the premium version is also offered.
