Set Default OS in Windows Dual Boot - Windows 7, Vista, XP

Configuring the Default Boot Operating System in a Dual-Boot Environment

When operating a computer with a dual-boot configuration featuring multiple Windows operating systems, specifying the default OS to launch is a straightforward process. This can be accomplished through the graphical user interface (GUI).

It’s important to note that if your setup includes Windows 7 or Vista alongside other operating systems, any necessary adjustments must be made from within the 7 or Vista environment, rather than from Windows XP.

Accessing System Properties

The initial step involves right-clicking on the "Computer" icon and selecting "Properties" from the context menu.

Following this, click on the "Advanced system settings" option.

Startup and Recovery Settings

Within the "System Properties" window, navigate to the "Startup and Recovery" section. Then, click the "Settings" button located underneath.

Selecting the Default Operating System

A dropdown menu will appear, allowing you to choose your preferred operating system. Simply select the OS you wish to be the default.

This selection determines which operating system will automatically load upon system startup.

This method provides a user-friendly way to manage your boot options. Alternatively, the bcdedit command-line tool can achieve the same result, though the GUI approach is generally considered more accessible.
