The Importance of Reliable Backups and Altaro Oops!Backup

Having a robust backup application is crucial for data protection. The creators of Hyper-V backup solutions have leveraged their expertise to develop a user-friendly option for individual users.

Altaro Oops!Backup, priced at $37, presents a streamlined and comprehensive backup solution specifically designed for home PC environments.

Effortless File Restoration

This software is marketed as a “Time Machine for Windows,” and it simplifies the process of recovering prior iterations of files or restoring those that have been permanently removed.

Automated Backup Process

Traditional backup methods often require manual intervention. Users typically need to connect a storage device, initiate the backup software, and then scan for modifications before initiating the copy process.

Altaro Oops!Backup distinguishes itself through its complete automation. Simply connecting the backup drive triggers the process, as the software continuously monitors files for alterations without requiring an initial scan.

Flexible Scheduling Options

For backups to internal or network drives, automatic backups can be scheduled to occur at predetermined intervals, with a default setting of every hour.

The software offers extensive customization options, allowing users to tailor the backup schedule and settings to their specific needs and preferences.

All settings are fully configurable, ensuring a personalized backup experience.

Initial Configuration

The Oops!Backup setup process guides users through the creation of a backup strategy and the execution of their initial backup. Existing users have the option to select “Users migrating to a new PC” for restoring a previous backup onto a new system.

Configuration is streamlined, involving just three key stages: selecting the folders for backup, designating a backup destination drive, and confirming your chosen settings.

By default, Oops!Backup secures your Windows user folder. However, the software allows for the easy inclusion of additional folders, or the selection of alternative folders for protection.

Altaro Oops!Backup suggests utilizing a removable drive for backups. Alternatively, backups can be directed to another internal drive or a network-accessible drive.

After completing the initial setup, a review of your settings is presented. Advanced program settings can also be modified at this stage, if desired.

Upon creation of your backup plan, Oops!Backup will immediately initiate the first backup process. The initial backup will require the most time to complete.

Subsequent backups will be significantly faster, as Altaro employs ReverseDelta technology to perform incremental backups.

Enhanced Capabilities

The Advanced Settings screen provides a range of configurable options for optimizing your backup strategy.

  • Plug and Protect – This feature initiates a backup automatically whenever an external drive is connected. It streamlines the process and represents a significant convenience.
  • ReverseDelta – Incremental backups are performed utilizing this method, storing only the changes (“delta”) between file versions rather than complete copies. This conserves storage space and accelerates backup times. The term “ReverseDelta” denotes a unique approach compared to traditional incremental systems; instead of maintaining a full original file and subsequent deltas, Oops!Backup retains a complete copy of the most recent version and stores prior versions as deltas. Consequently, a full version of your current files is always available, even if older versions are removed.
  • File Version Options – These settings govern the automatic deletion of older file versions by Altaro Oops!Backup, allowing you to manage disk space effectively.

Consider the following features for further refinement of your backup process.

  • Continuous Data Protection – Oops!Backup operates continuously in the background, monitoring for file modifications. This ensures subsequent backup operations are completed rapidly. The “Changed Files Since the Last Backup” report, accessible via the Reports tab in the main window, details the alterations that will be included in the next backup.
  • Backup Drive Redundancy - The Drive Manager allows for the configuration of a secondary backup destination. This provides protection against primary drive failure. A daily synchronization to the secondary drive is performed by Altaro Oops!Backup, minimizing the impact on regular backup durations.
  • Custom Exclusions - Utilize the "Add / Remove Backup Folders" button in the main window and select "Exclude a File Type" to define specific exclusion rules. For instance, you can exclude files based on their extension or the presence of particular keywords in their filenames.

File Restoration Procedures

The primary application interface displays a range of statistics. However, many of these functionalities are also accessible through the system tray popup.

A search function is integrated within both the main window and the system tray popup. This allows for rapid location of files within your stored backups.

Oops!Backup provides a visual backup browser. It can be initiated by selecting the “Go BackInTime and Restore” button located in the main window, or via the system tray popup menu.

Utilizing the Backup Browser

To begin the restoration process, navigate to the directory that houses the desired files using the graphical browser. A specific timeframe for restoration can be chosen using the controls on the right-hand side of the window.

Once the target file is identified, a right-click menu provides a Restore option. Should uncertainty exist regarding the correct version, the Preview function allows for read-only access to the file’s contents.

Additional Information

Altaro provides a complimentary, 30-day trial period. This trial includes access to all features present in the complete software version, enabling comprehensive evaluation.

Consider utilizing the trial to assess the software’s capabilities before making a purchase decision.
