Sketch It: Draw on Screen During Presentations

The Convergence of Science Fiction and Modern Reality

It appears the internet has definitively transformed the futuristic concepts of the 1980s into the tangible realities of today. Establishing remote access to a colleague’s computer is now instantaneous. Real-time video conferencing is commonplace.

Furthermore, documenting and visualizing travel experiences via GPS coordinates requires significantly less effort than it did even a decade prior.

The Irony of Technological Advancement

A recurring source of amusement is observing how advanced technology can be constrained by more basic limitations. During a recent virtual business meeting, a presenter was demonstrating a software application to the participants.

He attempted to highlight a specific section of his screen, but lacked a direct annotation tool. Consequently, he was forced to repeatedly move the mouse cursor around the desired area to draw attention to it.

Introducing Sketch It: A Solution for On-Screen Annotation

In scenarios like this, the ability to directly draw, sketch, or add notes on the screen during presentations or video calls would be invaluable. Fortunately, an innovative application known as Sketch It provides precisely this functionality.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Real-time Annotation: Allows for immediate visual feedback during presentations.
  • Versatile Sketching: Enables freehand drawing and note-taking directly on the screen.
  • Enhanced Communication: Improves clarity and understanding during remote collaborations.

Sketch It offers a simple yet effective solution to bridge the gap between sophisticated digital tools and fundamental user needs.

Initial Configuration of Sketch It

Upon the initial installation of Sketch It, a welcome menu appears, providing options to customize the software’s behavior to suit your preferences.

Selecting the Controls screen reveals a straightforward interface for managing the sketch pen. The application operates continuously, indicated by a discreet icon within the taskbar, confirming its active status.

Activating the Sketch Pen

To initiate drawing on your display, simply press and hold Control - Shift while clicking the left mouse button. This action enables the sketching functionality.

This configuration allows for immediate access to the pen at any time, facilitating quick annotations directly on the screen. No specific application context is required for use.

Versatile Application of Sketch It

For instance, during application testing, you can utilize the pen to annotate the screen with observations prior to capturing a screenshot. Enabling the pen requires only three keystrokes, ensuring accessibility whenever needed.

Drawings are System-Wide

Initially, the intention was to use this tool for marking up specific windows or images. However, a significant feature was discovered during testing. Drawings created with Sketch It are not confined to individual applications.

Instead, the software functions as if you are physically drawing directly onto your screen with a marker. Drawings can extend across multiple windows without impacting the functionality of the underlying applications.

This system-wide drawing capability provides a unique level of flexibility and utility.

Utilizing and Customizing Sketch It

After launching Sketch It on your system, adjustments to your sketches’ visual characteristics can be made through its menu interface. Access this menu by right-clicking the application icon located in the taskbar and selecting "Open Menu".

The folder menu provides screen capture functionality. Options like Copy Screen and Save Screen are similar; one copies the screenshot to the clipboard, while the other saves it as a bitmap file. Printing the screen’s contents directly to a printer is also available.

In essence, this application offers a distinctive capability to annotate not only within specific application screens, but also across all application windows and the entire monitor display. This provides a convenient method for highlighting areas or sections during presentations, whether in-person or during remote video conferences with screen sharing enabled.

I anticipate frequent use of this application during software reviews and online presentations. It’s a program I plan to keep installed. While artistic masterpieces are unlikely given the freehand mouse input, the flexibility to draw anywhere on the screen is valuable.

Try the program and share your thoughts. Are you aware of any alternative applications that offer comparable or superior functionality? Please share your insights in the comments section below.
