DoorDash Launches SafeDash: A New Security Toolkit for Delivery Providers
DoorDash is introducing SafeDash, a comprehensive in-app security system designed to enhance the safety and well-being of its delivery personnel during their work. Initial deployment of SafeDash is underway in several major cities.
Initial Rollout and Nationwide Expansion
The initial rollout of SafeDash is taking place in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. The company intends to make SafeDash accessible to all delivery personnel utilizing the platform throughout the United States by the end of the current year.
Partnership with ADT for Enhanced Safety Features
DoorDash has established a partnership with ADT to integrate two new, crucial features into the SafeDash toolkit. These features are designed to provide immediate support in potentially unsafe situations.
Safety Reassurance Call Feature
The “safety reassurance call” feature enables users to establish a direct connection with an ADT agent directly through the Dasher app. This connection is available whenever a delivery person feels vulnerable or insecure. The ADT agent will maintain contact with the individual until they report feeling safe.
Should a situation escalate, or if the user becomes unresponsive, ADT will proactively contact 911. Emergency services will then be dispatched to the user’s last known location, as determined by the GPS data from their smartphone.
Emergency Assistance Button
An “emergency assistance button” is also being implemented, allowing delivery personnel to quickly request assistance when needed. Upon activation of this button, an ADT agent will immediately contact 911.
The agent will then maintain discreet communication with the user via text message, relaying vital information – including their precise location – to the 911 operators. This feature allows users to summon help without the need for a verbal phone call.
Company Statement and Future Development
“SafeDash was developed in direct response to feedback received from Dashers,” stated Elizabeth Jarvis-Shean, DoorDash’s Vice President of Communications and Policy. “Our aim is to provide Dashers with an additional resource to ensure their safety and security while on the road.”
DoorDash is committed to expanding the SafeDash toolkit with further features. Plans include the introduction of virtual educational resources, direct communication channels, informative materials, and in-app guidance.
Comparison to Existing Safety Measures
It is noteworthy that DoorDash’s SafeDash toolkit shares similarities with Uber’s driver Safety Toolkit. Both platforms offer in-app emergency assistance buttons and a range of other safety-focused features.
Context of the Launch
The introduction of SafeDash occurs following DoorDash’s projection of potentially reduced performance in the third quarter. This forecast reflects ongoing uncertainties surrounding consumer behavior in relation to the pandemic and its potential impact on the business.
