DOJ Seizes $1 Billion in Bitcoin from Silk Road

Approximately 48 hours ago, a substantial amount of bitcoin – valued at roughly $1 billion and untouched since 2013 – experienced a transfer of ownership. This bitcoin had been held following the takedown of Silk Road, a major illicit online marketplace operating on the dark web and known for drug trafficking.

The entity responsible for the transfer has now been identified. It was the United States government.

The Department of Justice released a statement on Thursday confirming its acquisition of 70,000 bitcoins. These funds were originally derived from drug sales conducted on the Silk Road marketplace and had been moved by a hacker, identified as “Individual X,” into a digital wallet under their control.

According to court documents, the government is aware of Individual X’s identity.

The value of the bitcoin at the time of the transfer on Tuesday exceeded $1 billion.

U.S. Attorney David Anderson stated, “Silk Road represented the most prominent online criminal marketplace of its era. The successful prosecution of Silk Road’s creator in 2015 raised a significant question: what became of the funds? The forfeiture complaint announced today provides a partial answer to that question.”

He further added, “$1 billion of these illicit profits are now under the control of the United States.”

The Justice Department described Silk Road as the “most advanced and widespread criminal marketplace on the Internet.” In 2013, Ross Ulbricht, the site’s founder and operator, was apprehended, leading to the marketplace’s closure. Ulbricht was found guilty in 2015 and received a sentence of two life sentences plus an additional 40 years for his involvement. Authorities indicated the site featured nearly 13,000 listings for drugs and other unlawful services, generating substantial amounts of bitcoin revenue.

The Department of Justice announced on Thursday that the acquired bitcoin will be subject to legal forfeiture procedures.
