Docker Secures $23 Million in Series B Funding

Following the sale of its enterprise business in 2019, questions arose regarding Docker’s future trajectory. However, the company successfully repositioned itself last year as a cloud-native container company geared towards developers. This revised strategy is now demonstrating positive results.

Investment Details

Tribe Capital spearheaded the $23 million Series B funding round, with contributions from existing investors Benchmark and Insight Partners. To date, Docker has amassed a total of $58 million in funding, including a $35 million investment received concurrently with the Mirantis agreement.

The year 2019 presented significant challenges for Docker, marked by two CEO changes and the divestiture of its enterprise division. The company then focused on establishing a new strategic direction.

Strategic Shift and Growth

Despite the difficulties presented by the pandemic in 2020, Docker CEO Scott Johnston asserts that the company’s strategy has begun to materialize effectively. “The outcomes, we believe, are highly indicative of success,” Johnston stated.

He further revealed that the company experienced a surge in new developer registrations for the free product version, adding 1.7 million users. This brings the total number of registered users on the community edition to over 7.3 million.

A common objective for open-source projects is to broaden the user base of the community project and convert a portion of those users into paying customers. Prior to 2019, Docker struggled to achieve this conversion effectively.

Johnston indicated that the annual recurring revenue (ARR) increased by 170% last year, suggesting improved success in converting users. Specific financial figures were not disclosed.

Targeting Developer Needs

The company has identified a specific segment of developers who, despite the availability of a free version, are willing to pay for services. “While numerous upstream open-source technologies exist, and some users prefer to assemble their own solutions, we are also observing ‘two-pizza teams’ of eight to ten individuals who prioritize application development and are therefore inclined to invest in a service,” Johnston explained.

This open-source approach attracts investor attention due to the inherent activity it generates at the top of the sales funnel.

Investor Perspective

Arjun Sethi of Tribe Capital, the lead investor, highlighted Docker’s potential. His firm was actually a Docker customer prior to investing and anticipates substantial growth. “Tribe concentrates on identifying exceptional private tech companies demonstrating inflection points in their growth, with the capacity to scale towards significant outcomes with long-term venture capital. Docker aligns perfectly with this investment philosophy,” Sethi stated.

Future Workplace Strategy

Looking ahead, Johnston shared insights gained from the shift to remote work during the pandemic. Employee surveys revealed increased happiness and improved work-life balance with remote arrangements.

Consequently, Docker intends to adopt a “virtual-first” approach, even after offices are deemed safe for reopening.

However, the company plans to facilitate in-person team gatherings and an annual company-wide event. “We will prioritize a virtual-first model, but leverage the cost savings from reduced real estate expenses to bring people together and foster social connections,” Johnston said.
