DJI OM 5: Smaller & More Powerful Smartphone Stabilizer

DJI OM 5: A New Generation of Smartphone Stabilization
The advanced camera stabilization technology pioneered by DJI initially stemmed from its drone development. This technology has since evolved into a dedicated and comprehensive product line.
Rebranding and New Features
Approximately a year ago, the company announced a simplification of its smartphone-focused Osmo line, rebranding it as OM. Today marks the arrival of the OM 5, featuring a more streamlined design, enhanced image tracking capabilities, and an improved phone clamp.
Enhanced Portability and Design
A key focus of this iteration is portability. The OM 5 is roughly one-third smaller in size compared to the previous year’s model. This reduction in size also translates to a lighter weight than the OM 4.
The device now incorporates a built-in extension rod for capturing a wider range of perspectives. Furthermore, it boasts improved physical controls, including additional onboard buttons for convenient operation.
Simplified Experience for New Users
DJI is placing greater emphasis on accessibility for beginners with the introduction of the ShotGuide feature. This provides access to tutorials and editing tools, helping users capture high-quality footage from the outset.
The image tracking system has also been upgraded. ActiveTrack 4.0 now supports tracking subjects at up to 3x zoom while moving at speeds of up to 5 m/s. It accurately identifies and maintains a stable focus on the subject, even during dynamic action.
Versatile Shooting Modes
The three-axis stabilization system includes a variety of integrated shooting modes, characteristic of DJI products. These modes encompass:
- Gesture Control
- Timelapse/Motionlapse/Hyperlapse
- Panorama
- Dynamic Zoom (for a dramatic, Hitchcock-inspired effect)
- Glamour Effects (for automatic image enhancement)
- Spin Shot mode (for rotating the phone around its axis)
Additionally, a selection of templates are available within Story Mode, incorporating music and pre-defined movements – designed specifically for social media content creation.
Improved Phone Clamp and Accessories
The redesigned clamp is engineered to accommodate phones even when they are fitted with protective cases, eliminating the need for removal during mounting.
A new Fill Light Phone Clamp accessory is also being released, adding an integrated light source to the front of the device. This accessory will be available at a later date for $59.
Availability and Pricing
The OM 5 is available for purchase starting today, priced at $159.
