DJI Mavic Mini Upgrades: New Camera & Connection Features

We were impressed with the DJI Mavic Mini upon its release last year. As Matt pointed out in his review, “It includes all the essential features you’d expect in a high-quality drone. It boasts a capable camera, excellent range, and a responsive controller. It performs reliably in windy conditions and is fast enough for enjoyable flying.” Today, DJI enhances two key aspects of the original with the introduction of the Mini 2.
This new iteration, available for purchase today, represents an evolution rather than a complete overhaul. In this instance, that approach is entirely appropriate, given that the initial model was already well-designed, benefiting from the accumulated knowledge gained from multiple generations of DJI and Mavic drones. The dimensions and weight remain largely unchanged. The Mini 2 weighs 249 grams – approximately 0.55 pounds – and is easily foldable for convenient storage in a bag.
The camera likely represents the most significant improvement. The system is now capable of recording 4K video at 30 frames per second. Still images are captured at 12 megapixels, and a 4x digital zoom is included (DJI indicates that zoom levels up to 2x maintain lossless quality). Further refinements to the zoom functionality are anticipated in future iterations.Another substantial update is the integration of DJI’s exclusive OcuSync wireless technology – specifically, OcuSync 2.0 in this case. This technology is also featured in the latest Mavic Air. According to DJI:
This upgrade provides a transmission range of 19 kilometers – roughly 150% greater than the previous model. DJI also reminds users to maintain visual contact with the drone during operation. The battery life is expected to be approximately 31 minutes (a slight increase from the original’s stated 30-minute flight duration).DJI’s pre-programmed image capture features continue to be a standout element. There are five QuickShot modes (Dronie, Helix, Rocket, Circle, Boomerang), three panorama options (Sphere, 180, and Wide-Angle), and two image capture modes (Triple Shot and Timed Shots).
The price has increased somewhat. The system now begins at $449 (compared to $399 previously), including the drone, remote controller, and a single battery. A package priced at $599 includes two additional batteries, a charging station, and a carrying case – a worthwhile addition.Related Posts
