dji’s clever little pocket gimbal gets refreshed with improved video

Nearly two years have passed since DJI first launched the original Osmo Pocket. This compact gimbal stands out as a particularly impressive offering from a company known for its innovative products. As someone with only a casual interest in smartphone photography, I thoroughly enjoyed using the initial model and am eager to explore the capabilities of its successor.

The latest iteration simplifies the product’s name, now known as the DJI Pocket 2. Similar to the previous version, it functions both as an independent camera and as an attachment for smartphones, utilizing a handset and its larger screen for real-time shot previews. The three-axis gimbal is capable of capturing video in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second. High Dynamic Range (HDR) video functionality has been incorporated, along with an 8x hybrid zoom (or 4x optical zoom). An enhanced audio experience is provided through the addition of a four-microphone system.

DJI consistently prioritizes software development, and this is particularly evident in this product. I was notably impressed by the company’s ability to integrate sophisticated shooting modes, typically found in its drone technology, into such a small device, enabling the creation of professional-looking, cinematic footage. The updated version includes around six distinct shooting modes, as detailed by DJI:

The hardware has undergone some redesigns, featuring a detachable baseplate that allows for the connection of various new accessories, including an external microphone, a charging case, and a wireless housing. A wireless module is also available, enabling smartphone connectivity without a direct cable connection.

It maintains the original’s starting price of $349, which includes a control stick and tripod mount. The $499 Creator Combo adds a wide-angle lens, a wireless microphone with a windscreen, and a mini tripod. Both versions are available for purchase on DJI’s website beginning November 1.
