Dispo NFT Test: Sell Photos as NFTs - New Feature?

Dispo Explores NFT Integration with User Interest Test

The photo-sharing application, Dispo, known for its simulation of disposable camera aesthetics, initiated a trial run yesterday designed to assess user receptiveness to the idea of selling photographs as NFTs. A segment of the user base is now presented with a "sell" option on their images.

Selecting this button prompts users to register for notifications regarding the future launch of Dispo’s NFT sales functionality.

Evaluating NFT Implementation

Daniel Liss, CEO and co-founder, communicated to TechCrunch that Dispo is currently evaluating the optimal method for integrating NFT sales within the application. This is why a pilot program is being conducted with its users.

Currently, Dispo has not determined which blockchain technology it will utilize, whether it will collaborate with an existing NFT marketplace, or what percentage of sales revenue Dispo will retain.

“From the initial testing, it appears a dedicated experience will be built directly into the Dispo app,” Liss stated.

He further explained that this could involve a native Dispo feature connecting via an API to a partner platform, presenting a seamless experience for the user community.

This development signifies a new strategic direction for the social media platform. Dispo aims to redefine photo sharing by limiting visibility to images captured at 9 AM the following day.

The platform believes this approach encourages more authentic sharing, as users are restricted to a single shot, discouraging the pursuit of the “perfect” self-portrait.

Despite launching in December 2019, Dispo has experienced both significant attention and considerable controversy.

From David's Disposables to Dispo

Initially known as David’s Disposables, named after co-founder and YouTuber David Dobrik, the app quickly gained traction.

It surpassed one million downloads within its first week and reached the top spot on the App Store charts.

In March 2021, the app removed its waitlist and incorporated social networking features. However, shortly after, allegations of sexual assault against a member of Dobrik’s Vlog Squad surfaced.

Spark Capital subsequently ended its association with the company, leading to Dobrik’s departure. Other investors, including Seven Seven Six and Unshackled Ventures, pledged to donate profits from their $20 million Series A investment to organizations supporting survivors of sexual assault.

Liss clarified to TechCrunch in June, during the Series A confirmation, that Dobrik’s role was limited to marketing, with Liss serving as CEO from the outset.

In response to the controversy, the app prioritized product improvement and reduced promotional activities.

App Usage and Growth

Data from SensorTower indicates that Dispo has accumulated approximately 4.7 million global installations to date.

While January 2020 saw the highest download volume, exceeding one million installs, March 2021 marked the second-best month, with around 616,000 downloads following the waitlist removal.

Between March and August, the app experienced roughly 1.4 million downloads, representing a 118% year-over-year increase compared to the same period in 2020. This growth is attributed to the app’s expanded accessibility.

With the exploration of NFTs, Liss envisions Dispo not only transforming how photos are shared but also redefining the dynamic between platforms and their users’ creations.

“The most cherished memories possess inherent value, including economic worth, as they are products of our own creativity. Current social media models fail to acknowledge this,” Liss explained to TechCrunch.

He added that creators with large followings are typically compensated through brand partnerships rather than directly benefiting from their content.

Potential Impact on Community

Integrating NFT sales provides Dispo with a revenue stream through commission on user sales. However, questions arise regarding the potential impact on the app’s community-focused atmosphere.

“There is considerable curiosity and interest,” Liss acknowledged. “However, these are the very issues that necessitate further data collection.”
