disney+ has more than 73m subscribers

Disney+, the streaming platform celebrating its first anniversary, has reached 73.7 million paying subscribers as of the beginning of October.
This figure is based on The Walt Disney Company’s financial report for the fourth quarter, detailing performance through October 3rd. The company had previously announced a subscriber count of 60.5 million for Disney+ as of August 3rd.
The report also provides subscriber figures for Disney’s additional streaming offerings – Hulu currently stands at 36.6 million subscribers (including 4.1 million with Hulu + Live TV), and ESPN has 10.3 million subscribers, more than doubling its count of 3.5 million from the same period last year.
Disney’s direct-to-consumer division experienced a 41% increase in revenue compared to the previous year, totaling $4.9 billion. Simultaneously, operating losses decreased from $751 million in the fourth quarter of 2019 to $580 million this year. Disney explained that this reduction in losses was due to positive performance from Hulu and ESPN+, although increased expenses related to the expansion of Disney+ played a role.
Despite the success of its streaming services, Disney faced a challenging quarter overall, as the pandemic led to park closures and limited capacity at those that remained open. The company’s total revenue decreased to $14.7 billion (compared to $19.1 billion in the fourth quarter of 2019), resulting in a loss of $0.39 per share.
“Our direct-to-consumer business has been a significant positive, and is central to the future of our company,” stated CEO Bob Chapek. “On this first anniversary of Disney+’s launch, we are pleased to announce that the service has exceeded 73 million paid subscribers by the end of the fourth quarter – a result far beyond our initial projections for its first year.”
During the investor conference call, Chapek also mentioned that Disney+ is presently accessible in over 20 countries globally, with an upcoming launch planned for Latin America on Tuesday.
In related news, Disney+ has announced a shift in the premiere date for its inaugural Marvel series, “Wandavision,” moving it from December to January 15.
