Remove Shortcut Arrows in Windows 7, 8, and 10 - Easy Guide
Removing Shortcut Arrows in Windows
Windows visually distinguishes shortcut icons from original file icons by displaying a small arrow overlay. This serves as a reminder that the icon represents a link to another file or application.
While these arrows have been reduced in size across various Windows iterations, some users find them aesthetically unappealing. Fortunately, the process of eliminating these indicators is relatively straightforward.
Modifying the Windows Registry
The removal of shortcut arrows necessitates an adjustment within the Windows Registry. Several approaches can be utilized to achieve this, and the following methods are compatible with Windows 7, 8, and 10.
It’s important to exercise caution when editing the Registry. Incorrect modifications can lead to system instability. Backing up the Registry before making changes is highly recommended.
Steps to Remove Shortcut Arrows
- Open the Registry Editor by pressing Win + R, typing "regedit," and pressing Enter.
- Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile\IsShortcut. - Locate the Default value on the right pane.
- Double-click the Default value and change its data from "1" to "0".
- Close the Registry Editor and restart your computer or restart Explorer.exe for the changes to take effect.
Alternatively, you can navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.lnk and modify the Default value there, if the previous method doesn't work.
Following these steps will effectively remove the shortcut arrows from all shortcut icons across your Windows system. To revert the changes, simply repeat the process and set the Default value back to "1".
Manually Adjusting the Windows Registry
Although not the most straightforward method, the Windows Registry can be directly edited to customize system behavior without the need for additional software. This approach also allows for the reintroduction of the larger arrow indicators previously found in Windows Vista, should a user desire this aesthetic.
Prior to modifying the Registry, it is crucial to acknowledge the inherent risks. The Registry Editor is a potent tool, and incorrect alterations can lead to system instability or complete failure. However, this particular modification is relatively simple, provided the instructions are followed precisely. If unfamiliar with the Registry Editor, it is recommended to familiarize yourself with its operation before proceeding. Furthermore, creating a Registry backup – and a full system backup – is strongly advised before making any changes.
To begin, launch the Registry Editor by pressing the Start button and typing "regedit." Confirm the prompt allowing the Registry Editor to make changes to your system. Within the Registry Editor, utilize the left-hand navigation pane to locate the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
Examine the Explorer key to determine if a subkey named "Shell Icons" exists. If absent, create it by right-clicking the Explorer folder icon, selecting New > Key, and assigning the name "Shell Icons."
A new value must now be created within the "Shell Icons" key. Right-click the "Shell Icons" folder icon and choose New > String Value. Assign the name "29" to this new value.
The newly created value must then be modified. Double-click the "29" value and enter (or paste) the following string into the "Value data" field to remove the shortcut arrows:
%windir%\System32\shell32.dll,-50
Confirm the changes by clicking OK and exiting the Registry Editor. A system restart (or log off and log back on) is required for the modifications to take effect. To restore the arrows, simply delete the "29" value that was created; the "Shell Icons" key itself can remain.
Alternatively, the standard arrows can be replaced with the larger, Vista-style indicators. While visually prominent and potentially undesirable to some, this option provides clear identification of shortcut icons. To achieve this, use the following string for the value of the "29" key:
%windir%\System32\shell32.dll,-16769
Following this, close the Registry Editor and restart your computer to observe the altered appearance.
Simplify Shortcut Icons with a One-Click Registry Modification
Looking for a quick way to customize your Windows desktop? This article details how to modify shortcut appearance using pre-made registry hacks.
Downloadable Registry Hacks for Shortcut Arrows
For users who prefer not to manually edit the Windows Registry, we have prepared downloadable hacks to streamline the process. These tools offer a simple solution for altering the appearance of shortcut arrows.
We provide three distinct options within a single ZIP archive:
- One hack completely removes the shortcut arrows.
- Another replaces the standard arrows with larger, more prominent ones.
- The final hack restores the arrows to their original, default appearance.
To apply a hack, simply double-click the desired .REG file. Follow the on-screen prompts, and then restart your computer or log off and log back in to see the changes.
Understanding the Registry Modification
These downloadable hacks function by implementing the same changes to the Shell Icon key as described in our previous guide.
Essentially, each hack exports the modified key to a .REG file. Executing this file automatically adds the key to the Windows Registry, applying the desired visual effect.
If you are comfortable working with the Registry, consider learning how to create your own custom hacks. This allows for greater control and personalization of your system.
Customize Your Windows Experience with Ultimate Windows Tweaker
If you desire to eliminate shortcut arrows, utilizing a third-party tweaking utility presents a straightforward solution. Ultimate Windows Tweaker 4 stands out as an excellent option for Windows 10 users. Those operating Windows 8 should opt for UWT 3, while Windows 7 users will require UWT 2.2.
Notably, this tool is offered at no cost and functions as a portable application, eliminating the need for installation. Simply download the program, execute it, and begin customizing your system settings. Due to the extensive range of tweaking options available, a cautious approach is recommended.
Proceed with Deliberation
Implement changes incrementally, observing their effects before proceeding further. Ultimate Windows Tweaker proactively generates a system restore point upon startup. However, for added security, consider backing up your computer before making any adjustments, as utilizing system tweaking tools inherently involves a degree of risk.
To remove the arrows from shortcut icons using Ultimate Windows Tweaker, navigate to the Customization section located on the left-hand side. Subsequently, select the File Explorer tab and click the "Remove Shortcut Arrows From Shortcut Icons" option.
- To reinstate the arrows, repeat the same procedure.
- The button label will then change to "Restore Shortcut Arrows To Shortcut Icons."
The process is remarkably simple! Regardless of the chosen method, achieving your desired icon appearance should be attainable with minimal effort.
