Multi-Cloud Migration Analysis - device42

Cloud Migration Analysis with Device42
The year 2020 witnessed a significant surge in workloads transitioning to the cloud, largely driven by the pandemic. However, the complexities associated with migrating these workloads remained substantial.
Device42, a company specializing in infrastructure understanding, has launched a new product specifically designed to analyze existing infrastructure. This analysis aims to provide recommendations for the most economically viable cloud migration strategies.
Leveraging Machine Learning for Optimal Cloud Configuration
According to Raj Jalan, CEO and co-founder, the tool employs machine learning to identify optimal configurations. It currently supports four major cloud providers – AWS, Microsoft, Google, and Oracle – as well as VMware environments running on AWS.
“This new tool functions as a multi-cloud migration and recommendation engine,” Jalan stated. “By utilizing machine learning, we can continuously refine recommendations based on your current resource utilization, determining the cost implications of running those resources across various cloud platforms.”
Building on Core Competencies: Discovery and Dependency Mapping
This new capability expands upon Device42’s foundational strength: providing a comprehensive map of resources and their interdependencies. Understanding these relationships is often a significant challenge for organizations.
“Our primary focus is on hybrid IT discovery and dependency mapping, regardless of whether the infrastructure resides on-premises, in colocation facilities, or within the cloud,” Jalan explained.
Comprehensive Infrastructure Visibility
This approach enables Device42’s clients to visualize how all infrastructure components, including applications, interact with one another.
“A single tool offering both comprehensive discovery – spanning from the physical to the logical layer – and detailed insights, such as storage location on a web server, is difficult to find,” Jalan noted.
Focus on Understanding, Not Management
It’s crucial to understand that this tool is not intended for resource management or allocation adjustments. Its core function is to provide a complete understanding of the entire infrastructure landscape and the relationships between its elements.
The newest feature then focuses on identifying the most cost-effective pathway for migrating workloads to the cloud from their current location.
Company Overview
Founded in 2012, Device42 currently employs approximately 100 individuals. The company has secured around $38 million in funding, including a $34 million Series A round in 2019.
Jalan reports that the company maintains cash flow positivity and is experiencing “decent growth,” indicating a limited need for extensive external investment.
