Detail: Turn Your Phone into a Pro Live Video Camera

Detail: Transforming Smartphones into Professional Livestreaming Cameras
Detail is a newly established startup developing an application for both iOS and macOS platforms. Its core function is to enable users to leverage their iPhones as highly optimized cameras specifically for live video broadcasting.
The company aims to simplify the process of utilizing existing smartphone technology with popular livestreaming services, including platforms like Zoom, Google Meet, Twitch, Hopin, and YouTube Live.
Common Challenges in Livestreaming
Presenting to large audiences via livestream over the last year has often presented several difficulties. As highlighted by Joanna Stern of the Wall Street Journal, built-in laptop webcams generally deliver subpar video quality.
Investing in dedicated equipment – such as ring lights, specialized cameras, and high-quality microphones – can improve video quality, but this approach can be costly.
Furthermore, demand from remote workers has created supply chain issues, making it challenging to acquire these essential tools.
Beyond hardware, effective video production requires a distinct skillset. Individuals proficient in teaching or presenting may lack expertise in areas like white balance and anti-flickering techniques.
Detail’s Approach to Simplified Livestreaming
Detail is focused on streamlining the livestreaming process, making it accessible to everyone. The company believes the most capable camera is often the one readily available – the smartphone in your pocket.
Significant advancements in computational photography have dramatically improved smartphone photo quality in recent years. However, similar progress is needed to optimize the livestreaming experience.
Detail founder Paul Veugen emphasizes that while live video hosting has become commonplace, the processes preceding the transmission of the video signal offer substantial room for improvement.
Functionality and Development
Initially, Detail will function as a coordinated iPhone and Mac application, similar in concept to Camo and EpocCam.
The app will provide intuitive settings for adjusting color grades and applying filters, offering a user-friendly approach to smartphone-as-a-webcam technology.
The Team Behind Detail
The Detail team includes individuals previously involved with Human, a passive fitness tracking application launched in 2013.
Human automatically tracked activity levels and provided users with insights into their daily routines, predating Apple’s Activity rings and the Apple Watch. Human was later acquired by Mapbox in 2016.
Funding and Future Outlook
Detail has secured $2 million in pre-seed funding, led by Connect Ventures.
Additional investors include Hustle Fund, Alexander Ljung, Anke Huiskes, Arthur Kosten, Elodie and Tony Jamous, Hiten Shah, Janis Krums, Mart Kelder, Micha Hernandez van Leuffen, Othman Laraki, Omri Amir, and Sten Tamkivi.
Currently in active development, Detail is preparing to launch a beta test program. The application presents an interesting concept, and its progress will be closely monitored.
