Defragment Pagefile & Registry in Windows XP - How To

Maintaining System Performance Through Defragmentation

Optimizing system performance often involves ensuring your hard drive isn't excessively fragmented. A common issue arises in Windows XP, where certain critical system files cannot be defragmented using the built-in tools without resorting to paid software.

However, viable free alternatives do exist. One such solution is a utility known as PageDefrag, developed by Sysinternals (now a part of Microsoft). This tool is specifically designed for a single, crucial task, and performs it with notable efficiency.

How PageDefrag Works

PageDefrag operates as a boot-time process. This means it defragments the necessary system files before Windows XP locks them, circumventing the standard defragmentation limitations.

This topic was brought to our attention by reader Shawn, and we appreciate the suggestion.

Defragmenting System Files with PageDefrag

Upon launching the application, a list of system files will be displayed, alongside an indication of the fragmentation level for each. You can then select the "Defragment at next boot" option.

Alternatively, you have the ability to configure the tool to defragment at every boot. While this is possible, it isn't always the most practical approach.

During the reboot process, PageDefrag will prompt you to press a key if you wish to cancel the defragmentation operation.

Should you have enabled the option for automatic defragmentation on every boot and later decide to disable it, simply reopen the application.

Select the "Don't defragment (uninstall)" option, and then confirm your choice by clicking the OK button.

PageDefrag represents a valuable addition to any user's system maintenance toolkit. It's important to remember, however, that this utility is not intended to replace regular defragmentation of your other files.
