Bouygues Data Breach: Millions of Customers Affected

Bouygues Telecom Confirms Major Data Breach
Bouygues Telecom, France’s third-leading mobile network operator, has officially acknowledged a significant cyberattack resulting in a data breach impacting a substantial number of its users.
Details of the Incident
According to a public statement released by the company, unauthorized access was gained to the personal data associated with approximately 6.4 million customer accounts. The intrusion was initially identified on August 4th, though the timeframe for complete resolution of the breach remains undisclosed.
A dedicated webpage created to inform affected individuals details the types of information compromised. This includes customer contact information and details pertaining to their service agreements.
Specific Data Exposed
The stolen data encompasses not only personal contact details but also civil status information – or, for business subscribers, company data. Critically, IBANs (International Bank Account Numbers) were also accessed during the attack.
It is important to note that Bouygues Telecom currently serves around 26.9 million mobile subscribers.
Regulatory Reporting and Website Visibility
The incident has been formally reported to the CNIL, France’s data protection authority.
Interestingly, the webpage detailing the cyberattack initially included a “noindex” tag within its HTML source code. This tag instructs search engines to exclude the page from their indexes, potentially limiting its discoverability.
Company Response
A request for further clarification regarding the attack and the reasoning behind the page’s hidden status was sent to a Bouygues spokesperson, but a response was not immediately received.
Recent Trend in Telecom Cyberattacks
This breach follows closely on the heels of a similar cyberattack experienced by Orange, the largest telecommunications provider in France and a global industry leader.
On July 29th, Orange alerted its customers to potential service disruptions as it worked to isolate potentially compromised systems. Orange provides services to over 290 million customers internationally.
These incidents highlight a growing trend of cyber threats targeting major telecommunications companies.
