Dark Sky App and API Sunsetting Announced

Following Apple’s acquisition of Dark Sky in March 2020, speculation regarding the app’s future was widespread. It was largely anticipated that the highly detailed weather application would eventually be discontinued.

While the Android version of Dark Sky was promptly removed in July 2020, the fate of the iOS application remained initially unclear. The company stated there would be “no changes” to the iOS app “at this time.”

New Expiration Date for iOS App, API, and Website

Recently, a brief update on the Dark Sky blog, highlighted by 9to5mac, indicates a definitive end date for the Dark Sky iOS app, its API, and associated website.

Co-founder Adam Grossman’s statement suggests a commitment to maintaining the service until the close of 2022.

However, the wording leaves some ambiguity, as it doesn't definitively confirm a shutdown will occur after 2022. Clarification has been sought from Apple, and until a response is received, this serves as a warning of potential discontinuation.

API and Website Lifespan Extended

Interestingly, this announcement represents an extension of the original timelines for the API and the Dark Sky website. The website was initially slated for closure in August 2020.

The API was previously scheduled to be discontinued at the end of 2021.

Timing Coincides with iOS Weather App Update

This news arrives shortly after Apple unveiled a significant redesign of the native iOS Weather app during the WWDC event.

The improvements to the built-in Weather app likely influenced the decision regarding Dark Sky’s long-term viability.
