Cyberpunk 2077 Seizure Warning Controversy

The highly anticipated release of “Cyberpunk 2077” is approaching, however, the game’s developer, CD Projekt Red, is facing criticism regarding a specific early segment that carries the risk of triggering seizures. Individuals with epilepsy should be aware that, as of now, there is no method to bypass this sequence, and the problematic visual effect will reappear at various points during gameplay.

While flashing lights are known to potentially cause seizures in susceptible individuals, numerous prominent games still incorporate them for stylistic purposes. Typically, a standard disclaimer appears upon starting the game, acknowledging this possibility. However, this warning often indicates a potential for flashing lights, such as those that might occur from multiple flashbang grenades detonating in quick succession. Many titles also provide settings to lessen the intensity of flashing lights or modify their presentation, as part of broader accessibility features.

“Cyberpunk 2077” appears to venture into particularly sensitive territory, given that its game environment is characterized by the kind of dark, rapidly flickering neon illumination commonly associated with a bleak, futuristic setting. However, a particularly intense and poorly conceived event within the initial hours of the game has already resulted in a seizure for a Game Informer reviewer. This occurs during the “braindances,” or BDs – a feature allowing players to experience memories recorded by others through a specialized headset, which initiates with a burst of strong flashing lights:

The aforementioned event is visible in the screenshot provided (captured after the occurrence, but showing the device). I distinctly remember this moment from my own experience with the game, and noted the intensity of the light display. Unfortunately, this triggered a severe episode for one individual, and could affect many others when the game launches on the 10th.

Despite the extensive customization options available in “Cyberpunk 2077,” I was unable to locate a setting to reduce the frequency of flashing lights. I have contacted CD Projekt Red regarding this concern and hope they can implement a solution around the time of release or shortly thereafter. The company has acknowledged the issue on Twitter and stated they are actively investigating potential fixes.
