Cyberpion Secures $8.25M Seed Funding for Beyond-the-Firewall Security

Many organizations are unprepared for attacks like DNS hijacking or the insertion of malicious code into tools from external sources. Cyberpion, a recently established security company created by a team of seasoned security professionals, is dedicated to assisting businesses in identifying and mitigating these types of risks, which commonly originate from connections to their infrastructure resources – particularly as most businesses now depend on a diverse range of resources located outside of their traditional security boundaries.

The company announced today that it has secured $8.25 million in seed funding, with Team8 Capital and Hyperwise Ventures serving as co-leads. Cyberpion, which currently maintains teams in both the United States and Israel, intends to utilize this new investment to broaden its sales and marketing initiatives and expedite the advancement of its product offerings.

Cyberpion was co-founded by Nethanel Gelernter, who serves as the company’s CEO and previously held positions at Microsoft and as a security researcher, alongside Ran Nahmias, the company’s CBO and former head of cloud security at Check Point, with prior experience at Aqua Security and as a director of enterprise strategy at Microsoft.

Nahmias expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “What struck me most about Cyberpion is the distinctiveness of its approach compared to conventional security tools and the daily challenges they address.” He added, “As someone who enjoys exploring new concepts and continuous learning, Cyberpion presented a compelling challenge – a complex problem with a significant opportunity for growth and knowledge acquisition.”

Nahmias explained that the majority of companies currently concentrate their security efforts on safeguarding the environments they directly own and manage. However, businesses do not function in isolation, and their operations necessitate a network of third-party providers. “This interconnectedness introduces a broad spectrum of potential advantages and risks, effectively expanding the overall attack surface – an area often overlooked by existing security solutions and practices.”

The service distinguishes itself by evaluating a company’s security posture in relation to these threats by examining its connections across the public internet infrastructure. This allows for analysis of a company’s relationship with individual vendors, as well as their interconnectedness with others.

Through this approach, Cyberpion can identify a company’s complete inventory of both known and unknown assets within its ecosystem and perform continuous scans for security weaknesses. It also delivers alerts and provides guidance on resolving identified vulnerabilities.

“Attacks targeting the external digital assets of businesses are increasingly becoming a primary method for sophisticated cyber criminals,” stated Nathan Shuchami, managing partner at Hyperwise Ventures. “As hackers exploit vulnerabilities in expanding attack surfaces, Cyberpion delivers exceptional detection and protection capabilities, offering comprehensive security across the organization’s entire online environment. Hyperwise Ventures is pleased to co-lead the seed funding round for Cyberpion.”
