CryptoPunks NFT Bundle Sells for $17 Million at Christie's

CryptoPunks Auction Achieves $17 Million Sale
A collection of nine CryptoPunks portraits was successfully auctioned at Christie’s on Tuesday evening, realizing a price just shy of $17 million. This event represents a significant milestone in the burgeoning market for NFT art.
Origins of the CryptoPunks
The pixelated portraits offered were sourced from the holdings of Matt Hall and John Watkinson, the co-founders of the CryptoPunks platform.
CryptoPunks stands as one of the earliest NFT projects built on the Ethereum blockchain. Initially, in 2017, a total of ten thousand procedurally generated characters were distributed without cost.
Over time, a dedicated NFT community flourished around these ‘Punks. Recent months have witnessed an exponential increase in their value, fueled by the wider NFT market surge.
Recent Market Activity and Creator Success
TechCrunch recently published a profile examining the CryptoPunks community and the individuals who have invested substantial sums – ranging from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars – to become owners.
This auction provides a considerable financial return for the project’s creators. However, it follows closely on the heels of an even larger achievement: the launch of their new project, Meebits.
Meebits generated nearly $80 million in sales within a mere few hours of its release.
Auction Details and Ethereum Valuation
The concluding bid at Christie’s reached $14.5 million, escalating to $16.96 million when auction fees were applied.
Prior to the sale, many within the cryptocurrency community anticipated an even greater final price. This expectation contributed to a notable increase in CryptoPunks prices leading up to the auction.
Interestingly, despite the substantial dollar amount, the entire bundle sold for a slightly lower value when calculated in Ethereum, compared to the sale of a single alien CryptoPunk in March. That particular figure sold for 4,200 Eth, equivalent to approximately $7.2 million USD at the time.
Here's a summary of key points:
- Nine CryptoPunks sold for nearly $17 million.
- CryptoPunks is a pioneering NFT project on Ethereum.
- The creators also launched Meebits, generating $80 million in sales.
