Cruise Secures $5 Billion Credit Line for Autonomous Vehicle Production

Cruise, the autonomous driving division of General Motors, has secured a $5 billion line of credit. This funding, provided by GM Financial, will facilitate the purchase of hundreds of specifically designed Origin electric and autonomous vehicles.

Funding and Commercialization Plans

According to a blog post released on Tuesday by CEO Dan Ammann, this credit line increases Cruise’s available capital to over $10 billion. This substantial financial backing is intended to support the company’s preparations for full commercial deployment of its autonomous ride-hailing service.

Origin Vehicle Production at Factory ZERO

Initial, pre-production builds of the Cruise Origin have commenced at GM’s Factory ZERO facility. This plant, formerly known as the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant, underwent significant renovations and a name change.

Last year, GM committed $2.2 billion to Factory ZERO. This investment is geared towards the production of all-electric trucks and SUVs, alongside the Cruise Origin. An additional $800 million was allocated to supplier tooling and related launch projects.

Factory ZERO represents GM’s first manufacturing site entirely dedicated to electric vehicle assembly. Once fully operational, the facility is projected to generate over 2,200 employment opportunities.

Design and Features of the Origin

The Origin vehicle is the result of a collaborative effort between GM, Honda, and Cruise. It is specifically engineered for use in a ridesharing capacity.

Notably, the Origin is designed without traditional driver controls such as a steering wheel or pedals. It is capable of operating at highway speeds. The vehicle’s interior prioritizes passenger comfort, featuring a spacious layout with opposing seating arrangements, reminiscent of train interiors.

Testing and Commercial Launch Timeline

An initial batch of 100 pre-production Cruise Origin vehicles will be assembled throughout the summer. These vehicles will undergo rigorous testing at GM’s Milford Proving Ground.

Full-scale commercial production of the Cruise Origin is currently anticipated to begin in 2023.
