Create Groups of Portable Apps with Cameyo - Windows

The Challenge of Application Portability
Many individuals rely on specific applications for their daily tasks. A common issue arises when these applications are not present on a different computer.
Users are then faced with several options: utilizing alternative software, attempting installation if feasible, or postponing work until access to their primary machine is restored. Furthermore, operating system reinstalls necessitate a tedious reinstallation process for each favored application.
The Appeal of Portable Applications
Ideally, it would be possible to consolidate all essential applications into a single, portable package. This would ensure consistent access regardless of the computing environment.
Mac users generally experience seamless portability, as most applications on the macOS platform are inherently portable. However, the Windows ecosystem presents a different scenario.
Introducing Cameyo
Fortunately, a solution exists in the form of Cameyo, a dedicated portable applications creator.
Cameyo allows users to package their installed applications into self-contained, portable executables.
How Cameyo Simplifies Application Management
With Cameyo, applications can be launched directly from a USB drive or network location without requiring installation on the host computer.
This eliminates the need for repetitive installations and ensures that preferred software is always readily available, regardless of the circumstances.
Cameyo streamlines the process of maintaining a consistent software environment across multiple machines.
It provides a convenient method for preserving application configurations and data, further enhancing its utility.
Application Virtualization
Cameyo defines itself as an application virtualization solution. Its core function is to convert standard Windows applications, or collections of them, into self-contained executable packages. These packages can then be launched on any Windows-based computer.
To accomplish this, Cameyo necessitates that users perform a genuine installation of the application they intend to convert into a portable format. This installation process is monitored by Cameyo to identify the necessary components for constructing the portable application.
However, prior to virtualizing other software, the Cameyo application itself must be installed.

Upon launching Cameyo, users are presented with two primary options: "Capture Installation" and "Edit Existing Package". Selecting "Capture Installation" initiates the creation of a new portable application. Existing virtualized apps are displayed on the right panel, and "Edit existing package" allows for their modification.

Before the application installation begins, Cameyo captures a baseline snapshot of the system. The duration of this process is dependent on the system's complexity and the available hardware resources.

Following the initial snapshot, Cameyo provides confirmation that it is safe to proceed with the application's installation.

The desired application, or applications, are then installed as usual. In this instance, Crayon Physics, a favored game, was utilized for demonstration.

Once the installation is complete, return to the "Proceed with installation" window and click the "Install done" button. If multiple applications are to be included in a single package, install them all before clicking this button.
Cameyo will then take a second system snapshot. It's important to note that this snapshot typically takes considerably longer than the first. During testing, the process appeared stalled, prompting a system restart, only to discover that the extended duration was normal.

This "Post Installation Snapshot" is compared to the initial snapshot. The differences identified during this comparison represent the components required to run the application. These components, along with the application's executable file, are then packaged into a standalone portable application.
Therefore, it is recommended to close all running programs and suspend other computer activities before initiating the portable app creation process. This ensures that the detected changes in the snapshots are solely attributable to the application installation.
Creating a Portable Application
Following a period of anticipation, Cameyo will proceed with the application building process. The "Main executable" window will then be displayed. Several aspects require your review and confirmation prior to selecting the "OK" button, including the application's name, the desired save location, and identification of the primary executable file to launch upon package opening.
As illustrated in the example, "launcher.exe" should be designated as the main executable.

Press "OK" to initiate the portable application build within Cameyo.

Upon completion, a "Success" window will appear, providing a summary of the application's saved location.

You have now successfully created your portable application. It is recommended to back up the folder for future use, or copy it to a USB drive for execution on alternative Windows environments.
Initial experimentation with Cameyo’s portable application creator reveals areas for further refinement, particularly concerning its snapshot capabilities. While my own attempt proved successful, some users have reported compatibility issues with certain applications.
We encourage you to test Cameyo and share your experiences in the comments section below.
