Corsair Acquires Epoccam - Webcam App for iPhone

Corsair Gaming has announced the successful acquisition of EpocCam, the creators of the iOS application sharing the same name. The gaming hardware company’s interest in this acquisition is readily apparent, particularly considering the circumstances of 2020. The global rise in remote work, spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic, has dramatically increased the number of individuals participating in video conferences.
The EpocCam application is uniquely designed to utilize iPads and iPhones as webcams for both macOS and Windows computers. This software is compatible with widely used teleconferencing platforms such as Zoom, Skype, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams – a level of support exceeding that of the webcam software I am presently testing in its beta phase.
This acquisition places the EpocCam brand within Corsair’s Elgato division. Corsair initially acquired Elgato’s gaming assets in the middle of 2018. Following that purchase, the remaining Elgato operations were rebranded as Eve System, concentrating on smart home technology and automation solutions.
Given the often-subpar quality of integrated webcams in many laptops and desktop computers, the superior imaging capabilities of iPhones present a compelling alternative for users. Now under the ownership of a gaming company, it’s evident that a key focus will be leveraging this technology for video game live streaming.
The application has been re-released under the Elgato brand, featuring enhanced integration with their current product line. The company states that additional updates are currently being developed and will be released in the future.
