CommonGround Raises $19M to Revolutionize Online Communication

CommonGround, a company pioneering technology for what its creators term “4D collaboration,” has announced the completion of a $19 million funding round.
This marks another joint venture for Amir Bassan-Eskenazi and Ran Oz, who previously established video networking firm BigBand Networks. That company earned recognition with two technology Emmy Awards, became a publicly traded entity in 2007, and was later acquired by Arris Group in 2011. Prior to this, they collaborated at Optibase, a digital compression company co-founded by Oz, with Bassan-Eskenazi holding the position of COO.
While CommonGround remains in a stealth phase and intends to officially launch its initial product next year, Bassan-Eskenazi and Oz shared their concept. They recognize the advancements in video conferencing but believe it still falls short of replicating genuine, in-person interactions.
“Certain elements simply cannot be replicated through conventional video conferencing platforms,” Bassan-Eskenazi explained. “These solutions have improved over time, but they haven’t fully captured the feeling of entering a social setting… and immediately perceiving who is surprised, enthusiastic, or indifferent.”
Essentially, Bassan-Eskenazi, Oz, and their team are focused on developing online collaboration software that more accurately reflects the subtleties of face-to-face communication, and potentially even enhances it (leading to the “4D” designation). When questioned about integrating video conferencing with other tools, Oz suggested thinking of their approach as surpassing video, utilizing technologies such as computer vision and advanced graphics.Bassan-Eskenazi emphasized that the development of CommonGround has been underway for over a year, and isn’t solely a reaction to the current remote work environment. He also believes the potential market will remain substantial even as workplaces begin to reopen next year.
“Initially, we believed a segment of the workforce would appreciate this solution,” he stated. “Now, even my mother understands the need, as it mirrors how she connects with her grandchildren.”
The funding round was spearheaded by Matrix Partners, with additional investment from Grove Ventures and StageOne Ventures.
“Amir and Ran possess a compelling vision for the future of communication,” commented Matrix General Partner Patrick Malatack. “Their technical skills and proven track record of successful ventures made this an uncomplicated investment choice.”
